So I finally had time to read the full Supreme Court judgement - not a constitutional law expert but seems to me in the clear line of judgements restricting monarchy powers and favouring Parliament going back hundreds of years supremecourt.uk/cases/docs/uks…
It was this history of Parliamentary supremacy which used to be a fundamental tenet of Euroscepticism, the belief that because the ECJ could overrule UK decisions this was not in keeping with the way the UK system had developed. Was a strong case.
So it would be perfectly consistent for supporters of Brexit to say that the judgement of the Supreme Court was actually in keeping with their reasoning for leaving the EU. Ok, they could say, we're leaving, but on this occasion the government went too far... but no...
What we see instead in the Government and Brexit supporters response to the Supreme Court is a populist howl of rage that owes nothing to British history and not much to the EU, but is the UK version of Orban or Trump
I think summed up well here "This Supreme Court decision is a telling illustration of why all populist authoritarians need to dismantle the independent judiciary". Among many splits, Brexit has split UK eurosceptics. /end conorgearty.co.uk/blog/2019/09/2…
Here's another top read on the Supreme Court judgement from @Dannythefink - showing the real tensions in the Conservative Party between those with respect for the law, and those pursuing no-deal Brexit no matter what the institutional cost conorgearty.co.uk/blog/2019/09/2…
@Dannythefink Oops, wrong link for the @Dannythefink article - should have been thetimes.co.uk/article/986502…
