This is my mostly ridiculous Todd Phillips story.

Years ago, when I was in my early 20s, I was having drinks at the Four seasons bar with some co-workers. A random guy comes over and tells me that Todd Phillips wants me to come to his table.

I'm like, who's Todd Phillips?
The guy goes, he directed Old School!

I'm like, oh that's a funny movie! Are you a good friend of his?

The guy says no, he's not. He just met Todd tonight. Then Todd sent him off to fetch me and to tell me he directed Old School.

My friend wanted to meet him, so I asked if..
...we could all go over and say hi.

The dude goes over, asks Todd, then comes back & says no, just me.

I told him I'm not the kind of girl you send a random guy over to call over to your table.

The guy leaves, comes back, invites us all over to the table. Begrudgingly...
I go along. The guy was acting so weird. Sitting alone in a bar sending near-strangers over to random 23 year-olds to let girls know who he was?

The actual conversation with him was even weirder. He didn't get, or made fun of, my major at UCLA (then called Women's Studies) &
eventually said we could leave.

Honestly, I've met a LOT of A-list celebrities living & working in this town but he was BY FAR the weirdest.

All of this to simply say that, from what I saw then, this person has no business commenting on normal human behavior.
Also I shouldn't have implied he's A-list. I'm not trying to be mean, but I don't think that would be technically correct.

I've been thinking a lot, lately, about the idea that bullied kids are the ones who become school shooters & mass shooters...

I know I'm not the first one to originate this idea, but it seems like a derivation of The Vampire Myth which dehumanizes & further isolates survivors.
(probably not "derivation" but rather another version of...)

Has anyone read anything good about this myth of the bullied school shooter? Something well-founded, from a reliable source?

Seems to me that there is probably some degree of deliberate misleading by shooters...
...to portray themselves as victims, or perhaps to even see themselves as victims - when in truth, they were probably creating their own social isolation by being aggressive/unkind/scary to other kids. Thining of Parkland shooter's alleged history of intimate partner violence...

I'm an editor at an indie publication owned and primarily run by women.

If you're comparing what an indie pub can pay to a large corporate site funded by some rich bro, you're just not thinking things through.

Things to know:

Sites like Autostraddle simply CAN'T ...
...monetize their clicks the way that a site like Glamour or even the site I work for (with primarily very mainstream content) can.

The sites can't pay writers so much that they won't be able to pay for their servers, editors & necessary expenses.

There'd be no site left.
Smaller, but still thriving, sites like the one I work for can't pay what large publishing companies or well-funded start-ups can pay. We just can't! We wish we could!

And sites even smaller and considered more niche/"risquee" by advertisers can pay even less.

This interview pissed me off so bad.

Todd Phillips is a rich white guy who has no grasp on the reality of life for the average American.

This "if it gets people talking, it's a good thing!" argument is so specious it's almost a joke.

NO, Todd. No.
In our society, there are lines we've decided collectively not to cross. When someone crosses them, we say "hey, that's the wrong thing to do!" and either it's a crime or just something offensive. But we call it out. We try to stop it.

The fact that...
...we are "talking about" something that crosses a line doesn't undo the harm. It doesn't undo the offense.

We can talk about mental health & social isolation without making the serial killer the hero, without making his suffering the central story.

We don't need more...

"And so are you, if you came all the way here." Hyolyn leans on the counter. Jeongyeon tries to only look at her face. "Is she human?"

"Maybe."
"So you don't know." Hyolyn says.

"Just a hunch." Jeongyeon shrugs.

"Hmm." Hyolyn could pretty much be eating her alive with her eyes. "You hunters have some pretty good hunches."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning she's a sad, sad Silver sitting right there." She nods at the counter.
Jeongyeon turns her face to look and sees a Silver drinking from a red cup. Her face was scarred and she looked incredibly depressed. Jeongyeon's first instinct is to pull her gun, but she couldn't cause trouble in the club.

She takes another sip of her drink. "Thank you."

She can feel them filling her entire soul, echoing through time eternal. It keeps repeating. Every single time it fails, it just adds more ripples to the cycle.

It's agonizing.

The pain shoots through her eye. She grunts, pulling. The chains hold her back.
Jihyo swallows dry as the pulsating pain makes her want to rip her eye off. She can't, though.

The eyepatch is on the floor; her golden eye, breathing. She closes her eyes. It just gets worse. She opens them again.

One more ripple.

Jihyo pulls again. The chains nearly break.

1) I'm not sure how to make people remember or care that 15 years ago the United States invaded Iraq, setting off a war that continues to this day, with several hundred thousand Iraqis dead, millions turned into refugees. I covered the invasion for the New York Times Magazine.
2) Though I'm a writer, I shot photos during the invasion as I drove a rented Hyundai SUV from Kuwait into Iraq via Safwan, then up the spine of the country to Nasiriya, Diwaniya, Hilla, Kut and finally Baghdad. Here's the Hyundai on March 19, 2003. It's clean--that will change
3) The photographer I worked with, Laurent vander Stockt, drove his own SUV. After several failed attempts to get into Iraq, one time turned back at gunpoint by U.S. soldiers, we finally got through, via what we guessed was a minefield (I followed Lauren tracks). Here's Laurent.
