THE DEVIL CALLED DEBT
Owing money i have no guaranteed means of paying is part of my early blunders as an adult. I dont believe in horoscopes, but there's a striking coincidence between Aries and Taurus people being easily excitable and overly optimistic. I dont know Fred's star.
Social pressure to meet up is real and people who have natural avoidance discipline of not keeping up with the Jones, will never understand how the mind of those struggling with living a fake life, works. Its like wondering why people commit suicide on matters we see as no-issue.
We borrow cars and rent wedding gowns because we wont stop shoving our privileges in people's faces as mandatory sociality standards. I once saw female roommates at a Lekki bus stop brawl. The issue was, one wore a new wig that belongs to the other, without her permission.
It didn't end well when I wore my cousin's sneakers to school without his permission, to show off to a girl I was crushing on. Sadly, the girl didn't come to school that day. Not long after my cousin saw me on my way home and collected his shoes, I ran into the loml, bare footed.
Its fun dragging people who travelled to Dubai on credit. This same joke pokes at you bank employees that have -N6,612 left from a monthly salary of N280,000, after loan deductions. All you have to show for it are clothes, and an iPhone that's permanently plugged to a power bank.
There's a scale to all the wanton social pressures we yield to. There are Executives under the burden of bank loans they have no means of paying back, obtained to keep their kids in American universities, because their friend's children are also abroad. Wait until your dad dies.
When you borrow a car to show you have one, you'll borrow to buy clothes to match the fake status and you'll need a lie to explain where the car is, when the true owner retrieves it. Ladies that were force feed Kunu as children, will be pointing at Milkshake, on a date with you.
I laughed when an undergrad told me he wants to be coming out like DaddyMo.
Dont get it twisted seeing him post pictures of him lounging. There'd have been times he gave himself to ruthless hard work, with brain calculating moves 24-7. Its only in movies people go on tea breaks.
All you startups that are easily excitable at the sight of venture capitalists need to be careful. Before the recent layoffs, I knew more than 6 months ago that Andela is up against turbulence. Many dead startups are maintaining a front office facades, because of social pressure.
CEO, dont die in debt because of what people will say. The cliche - winners don't quit is a big fat lie! Quitting can be a solution. Its OK, if its not working. Its not OK, if its not working and you're sinking in debts. A time will come, you'll start borrowing against illusions.
I have 27 Mack 40tons trailers at Sagamu, parked in more than a year. People often express shock that such a huge investment is locked up. They're glued only to profit opportunities. Many people in business hardly realize cash flow will kill a business faster than lack of profit.
At the beginning, I had funds with which I got six trailers to haul A4 Paper for a major importer. I was about the only bankable person amongst all the haulers involved. The paper importer imported 21 trailers and offered to give them to me under a bank credit arrangement.
Client asked their banker to pay them (seller/client) on my behalf for the trucks, with me using the trucks and the turnover of my transactions with them (client) as security. Things went well and I began to think I'm close to early retirement, until Buhari's recession happened.
Forex affected the client badly, and It couldnt pay me and the truck loan went bad. Litigation began, accidents followed. Dont look too far, if you're wondering where I got gray hair from. If you want to do haulage, start by imagining getting a call your trailer killed 12 people!
Thereafter i began owing N20,000 that I couldnt pay. Rightfully, some friends vowed not to ever give me money again, and I lost many vital relationships. The rest is history. Wherever you've attracted contempt bcos of money, God will deliver you. But you too, keep away from debt!
How I got out of my travail:
▪︎Open many integrity accounts.
▪︎Be open to your creditors.
▪︎Know your disposable friendships when in crisis.
I have a friend that will give me money 100 times, even if I dont pay 100 times. It began by me giving him, when he couldnt pay back.
