1/5 When writing a research proposal, the first thing to do is to stick to a topic that sustains your interests. There is no point starting a graduate programme and not completing it because you lost interest in it.

2/5 Also very often some candidates try to come up with topics that they hope has the potential to ‘change the world’. This is often the case with doctoral studies. Starting out this way could be counterproductive and quite misleading.

3/5 While there is nothing wrong with being ambitious, it is more prudent to consider the 3 most important things when deciding a research topic that is both ‘feasible’ and ‘viable’.

i. The availability of data for the study.
ii. Availability of supervision.
ii. Time-frame for the study.

5/5 In other words, you don't want to start your research and get stuck mid way because there is no data for the research. You also don't want to struggle with your research because your supervisor is not so interested in it.

2/5 A very important component of your research proposal should be its contributions to the body of knowledge by clearly mentioning the gaps you hope to fill in the existing literature.

3/5 I suggest you keep your research proposal to a maximum of 5 pages or preferably shorter if you can. Remember these proposals are often sent off to potential supervisors who also have a lot to work on.

1/5 Your research proposal should begin with an introduction or background. It should then contain your potential research questions. Ideally, I would suggest one major question and then two other operational questions from the first.

2/5 It may be helpful to include hypothesis if you have any that set the course for the research. Then a methodology section should also be included which should clearly spell out how you intend to collect and analyse data.

3/5 You can preferably include this in a tabular form. This is not necessary when applying for a masters programme but it is very important for a PhD programme.

@EFF Years ago, as most of us know, Aaron was persecuted by overzealous prosecutors into taking his own life after releasing a trove of illegally downloaded academic papers to the public.
@EFF This research was in general publicly funded, whether through direct grants and funding, taxpayer dollars allocated to studies, or free work by students and researchers subsidized by government loans.

This tweet from President Trump is a great illustration for what I hope we could help students to learn about how to process and respond to information in today's world. A thread on critical thinking process and writing from that process.
The first thing I'd want students to do is ask if those numbers are accurate in and of themselves, if that's really the GDP and unemployment rates. Second, I'd want them to ask if the larger claim is accurate, if it's the first time this has been true in 100 years. (It's not.)
But then, students must go further. They should know to ask whether or not this comparison is meaningful, and if GDP increase and unemployment rate are linked in ways that tell a larger story or have bigger implications. (They aren't, or at least not in the way Trump implies.)

Get a portfolio said the writing panel/advice/speaker in what is the latest throwaway simple advice that instantly builds a career…. So, let’s talk about them.

1)Portfolios are NOT magic. Simply having one doesn't get you a job. Tey are a tool to be used in chasing work and an increasing number of employers ask for them. Having one can be very useful, but just putting some bits of writing in the same place does not = instant career.
2) People tend to read your email first, then your c.v. and then portfolio. Mess up stages 1, or 2 and 3 may well not matter. Always rework your email, c.v. and portfolio for EVERY application. Focus on what matches that job/company.
