Hey Seattlefolk! I'm flying up tonight and would love to see friends, meet new folks, and connect my sister with some local engineering pals. We will be hanging out at McMenamins Six Arms, around 4 pm tomorrow. Do come out and join us. ☺️🌈 🍸
She just started work as a mechanical engineer, but taking coding boot camps and I think she is destined for software. I want her to meet people.

She likes mountains and hiking and -- this is starting to sound like a personal ad, and yes she is single (she is going to kill me)
Esp if you are a recent grad, or a woman in engineering, come hang out and meet my sis and drink cocktails with us. Make friends, raid my sticker box.

It might not sound like the most thrilling topic -- how we reduced our costs by exploring spot instances! -- but frankly more engineering should be like this: useful, solid, experiment-driven... and kinda boring if you aren't a total nerd for this shit. ☺️🐝
(which leaves plenty of energy left over for sleep, hobbies, blog posts and an utterly deplorable number of puns. to be clear, I dot approve of those.)

Open thread: after you merge to master, how does your code get validated and rolled out to users? How many human- initiated steps, if any; what is the human override, if none; and is there any automated attempt to remediate a failure?

To recap, you can basically tell how high performing a team is by asking four questions: time to delivery, time to recovery, failed deploys and frequency of deploys.

Wow, lots of interest in my shitty cron deploys. Ok, here's how they work (or how I wired them up three years ago anyway):

CI/CD does its thing on each commit. As a last step, it uploads version stamped artifacts to S3.
Every service runs in an ASG named after the service that runs there. Every 30 min or so from cron, a shitty bash script runs that checks s3 for a newer artifact for its service name.

If it finds one, it sleeps random seconds and then fetches and installs it.
The script is smart enough to revert and start back up the old version if the new one can't start up for some reason.

You can also invoke a rolling restart by just using dsh to run the deploy script instead of waiting for cron.
