It might not sound like the most thrilling topic -- how we reduced our costs by exploring spot instances! -- but frankly more engineering should be like this: useful, solid, experiment-driven... and kinda boring if you aren't a total nerd for this shit. ☺️🐝
(which leaves plenty of energy left over for sleep, hobbies, blog posts and an utterly deplorable number of puns. to be clear, I dot approve of those.)

To recap, you can basically tell how high performing a team is by asking four questions: time to delivery, time to recovery, failed deploys and frequency of deploys.

Wow, lots of interest in my shitty cron deploys. Ok, here's how they work (or how I wired them up three years ago anyway):

CI/CD does its thing on each commit. As a last step, it uploads version stamped artifacts to S3.
Every service runs in an ASG named after the service that runs there. Every 30 min or so from cron, a shitty bash script runs that checks s3 for a newer artifact for its service name.

If it finds one, it sleeps random seconds and then fetches and installs it.
The script is smart enough to revert and start back up the old version if the new one can't start up for some reason.

You can also invoke a rolling restart by just using dsh to run the deploy script instead of waiting for cron.

Response to @solomon_teach latest blog post medium.com/solomonkingsno… I agree completely we should design our curriculum to focus on the fundamentals, & rushing through advanced content in a superficial way is good for no-one. However, I don't agree this is a GCSE design problem.
GCSEs are summative tests, and summative tests are designed to provide shared meanings of the performance of large numbers of students. This inevitably means they have to differentiate between wide ranges of attainment, so they need questions which differentiate.
Daniel Koretz addresses exactly this point at length in chapter 2 of Measuring Up (which I thoroughly recommend.)

It's been 3 years since my first blog. I remember how terrified I was to hit "publish" on my first #blog post. Unleashing my words into the worldwide web was a scary thought. What if people hated my writing? Or worse, what if the article had mistakes? (1/5) #writingtips #SciComm
Importantly, this was supposed to be my first step towards transitioning into a career in #sciencewriting- a field that was a complete black box to my family and friends. Needless to say, everyone, including myself, was skeptical. (2/5)
Anyways, I tried, and learned 2 things over the years. 1) My writing didn't (positively or negatively) break the internet. At it's best and worst, readers moved on with their lives. (3/5)
