Today, on Sep 28th, 1907, revolutionary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh was born. No one then had imagined that he will become a prominent figure during the struggle for freedom of India. His death at the age of 23, inspired thousands to take up the cause of the freedom movement.
Born to Kishan Singh & Vidhyavati Kaur, Bhagat was an atheist. He was grown in a politically aware environment, and he incited the sense of patriotism at a very young age. At his young age, he followed the Non-cooperation movement, initiated by Gandhi.
But his views completely changed after the Jalianwalabagh massacre. He joined the Young Revolutionary Movement. During that time, his parents planned his marriage but he refused and said, "if my marriage has to take place in Slave-India, my bride shall be only death."
His popularity gradually increased because of his actions, he was on the focus of the British government. In 1928, Bhagat Singh & his comrades had to choose the path of violence when Lala Lajpat Rai was killed during a silent protest against the Simon Commission by the British.
He and his associates plotted the assassination of James Scott, who ordered lathi charge as revenge, but they mistakenly killed JP Saunders. He cut his hair & beard,500 policemen couldn't recognize him at the railway station and he escaped for Lahore.
In 1929, he & his associates threw a bomb, shouted "Inquilab Zindabad", and threw pamphlets outlining their missive during an assembly to protest against the formulation of the Defence of India act.The bomb was flung away from the crowded place, as it wasn't meant to harm people.
It was even confirmed in British Investigation & Forensic reports. Yet he was sentenced to be hanged on March 23, 1931. He was not even allowed to meet his family & relatives.
In last time, his warder requested him to pray & remember Waheguru. He smiled & replied, "I had never taken his name in his entire life. Now if I pray to him during my last time, he will consider me as a coward & hypocrite. If I don't do it, at least I would be considered honest.
Many generations have passed, more will be passed. But, his name will never be forgotten. He was exactly 23 years, 5 months and 25 days old at the time of his execution. Bhagat Singh was an avid reader, had completed over 600 books in his short span of life. Bow to the legend.
