And my point is that this parliament is not going to decide Brexit.
Only the new parliament we elect in November can resolve Brexit one way or another.
Talk about this parliament doing anything is obsolete. The new one . . . brrrrrr

Tory majority - Attempt at Brexit, Irish border brings America into it, international crisis, no Brexit

Labour majority - A failed renegotiation and referendum

Any form of coalition - Referendum
See, if the Tories won a majority, even 100 majority, they still can't solve the Irish border because it can't be solved in Westminster.
Sorry, Brexters, but someone's got to tell you. There is no such parliament you can elect that can get Brexit done.

Of the four options for Brexit:

1. May's deal
2. New deal
3. No deal
4. No Brexit

May's deal is gone. We are now on the last gasp of "new deal" which will be rejected tomorrow
Once Europe has rejected Johnson's . . . offer . . . we will finally come down to the last two options.
No deal or no Brexit.

Like I told you two years ago it would come down to this in the end.
Johnson can't tolerate no Brexit because he's postured himself up so much.
But the law is going to step in and force an extension which leads to a general election, a referendum and remain.

I told you when I first heard this daft idea of national unity, I told you it was just going to stir people up, and they were going to get angry when it didn't happen.
There was never any possibility of this, but you've got people emotionally worked up about it, you got them thinking it was realistic, and now they're getting angry because it hasn't happened.
It was never going to happen, but you convinced them it was.
Unity government. Fuck sake . . . Not only is it impractical, as you're finally beginning to see which is why you're getting angry, but it's also unnecessary.

Because it's a stupid idea. It only sounds like a sensible idea because you've got no idea what a sensible idea sounds like.

You want it to ask for an extension to Article 50 before we get kicked out on October 31st.

My timeline's going to be busy today. For our viewing delectation, we have: Parliament eating itself to prove pundit spin about Boris & coups; the latest Gina Miller "Only I know what's Best for Britain" love-in, & the appeal to Scotland's Inner House about Boris's prorogue.
Up in Scotland, they've kicked off early & counsel for the plaintiffs (Jo Maugham, Joanna Cherry + 70ish others) is waxing lyrical about the Government providing them with redacted documents. GDPR/National Security clearly not an issue for them, then.
Meanwhile, back in London, Shami Chakrabati (she of the dodgy Labour anti-semitism report which bought her a peerage) has arrived. She's an intervenor, somebody deemed to have an interest in the case with a perspective that impacts the arguments. Written submission only, though.

1. The Bill. He wants to attach strings about "when and how" the money is paid over.

This is old Brexiteer (@DavidDavisMP) thinking - the 'bill' as down payment on future, rather than EU view of settling debt /2
@BorisJohnson @DavidDavisMP It's a sensitive subject in Brussels, but I think it's about wanting to argue for a changed dynamic in phase 2.

Boris will argue he will 'tackle hard' in second half, but needs more than warm words. Needs to point to leverage. /3

1. Various establishment figures are ramping up their calls for another referendum. Skipping the well rehearsed points, like everything else they haven't thought it through. It wouldn't solve anything. #Brexit thread.
2. At this point, the only intelligible fair vote would have to be an exact re-run of 2016. What they want is to secure a slender victory that allows them to gloss over the whole affair. But it won't work. It wouldn't be an affirmative mandate for what the EU is.
3. If they managed to secure a remain vote, it would be a reluctant resignation to the fact that our establishment is not capable of self-governance and is lacking the talent and imagination to deliver meaningful change. That does not solve the inherent legitimacy problem.

1. There are two sides to the "rule out no deal" #Brexit debate - and both are wrong. There is no ruling out no deal. You can delay or revoke, but for as long as talks are in progress, no deal remains the default outcome unless a deal is agreed.
2. Parliament does not have the power to force the PM to ask for an extension. She is well within her rights to let the clock expire. Parliament can only take no deal off the table by voting for a deal.
3. The Brexiters, though, seem to think that no deal is leverage. It isn't. Brussels will not reopen the withdrawal agreement. Unless we extend for the 21 months, there is no chance of reframing negotiations. As far as they are concerned it is a non amendable instrument.

One way or another a British prime minister will sign the NI backstop. Either it will be May as part of a negotiated exit deal or by someone else after we crash out when the EU is calling all the shots and demanding all its own terms.

Should we crash out then if even half of no deal warnings are true (and there is plenty evidence to suggest they are) then UK has zero leverage of any kind and will simply have to concede to whatever the EU puts on the table just to reopen talks - as no deal cannot stay no deal.
There is really no way to avoid a backstop of some sort. A review clause is the best we can hope for. The best strategy is to sign it then make damn sure it never gets activated by joining Efta and retaining the EEA. The remaining issues are then far simpler to resolve.

1. So with #Brexit, we now have a provisional whole UK political agreement that we will have regulatory alignment with a view to maintaining free movement of goods. The future trade agreement will have to respect those conditions.
2. That is a long winded way of say that so far as goods are concerned, we are staying in the single market. That though does not take into account services, air travel and the many other areas covered by the EEA agreement. That is still for negotiation.
3. When it comes down to that, it is likely that the UK will wish to preserve as much access to the EU aviation market as possible with the same or similar rights to the EEA. We have, as yet, no concrete position on what the UK will ask for in terms of services.
