Alan Turing is surely one of the brightest minds of the past century. His main discovery, Turing Machines, is too often linked to modern computers and Enigma. This description misses the depth of his research and genius. Let's talk about a quest for truth, his quest. #Thread
In 1936, when he was 24 years old (!!), Turing wrote the foundational scientific article "On computable numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem" . The results in this paper gave a massive blow to Mathematical Logic as a discipline. Wait...Logic and not Computing?
At the time computers don't exist, nor their theory, computer science. Yet though, Turing is already planting the seeds for what will become computer science.
What is his motivation? The Entscheidungsproblem. No worries I also don't know how to pronounce that.

Vol. II lays out the factual findings from the Mueller investigation regarding obstruction of justice.

A few comments about “facts” and “evidence.” Not all evidence is admissible in court.

1/ The rules of evidence are intended to screen out unreliable evidence (like hearsay).

There are a few problems with piecing together the story from news reporting—which I did, and lots of others, too. We wanted to connect the dots.
2/ Even when the facts are accurately reported, the evidence may not be admissible in court. (Like double hearsay)

Also, something can look really bad in a news article, but when the source is cross-examined, the “evidence” can fall apart.

In this ironically pedantic editorial accusing historians
public engagement as pedantic, Dr. Fallon makes a series of accusations that are serious enough to warrant explanation and discussion. I am a relative newcomer to the historical thread phenomenon, but am invested.
So, I will try to respond to some of points raised in the Chronicle piece, speaking from my experience but also (I hope) capturing the experiences and motivations of some of the more prolific Historic Threaders. #twitterstorians
