Tory rants about a 'liberal metropolitan elite' are disturbing echoes of Nazi & Stalinist propaganda against 'rootless cosmopolitans'. Such rhetoric is aimed at dehumanising a section of the population by portraying them as an alien contaminant in the healthy body of the nation.
Such rhetoric always has the same purpose, to depict those who question the simplistic, emotive slogans and lies of the leadership as alien to, and enemies of, the real decent honest folk. It is the language of totalitarianism in which opponents cannot belong to the people.
The Tories and their press allies are not Nazis or Stalinists or totalitarians. But they are helping themselves to totalitarian rhetoric and ideas, and so spreading this evil in our society, inculcating millions with totalitarian ideas and habits of thought.

1/ When we ask Leavers to name a benefit of Brexit we miss the point. At the level of gut feelings, they are engaged in a fantasy war of independence against the EU to regain the national pride lost in the humiliating collapse of empire & our forlorn entry into the EEC.
2/ Once you see Brexit in terms of a pride-restoring fantasy war of independence you see why economic arguments have little or no impact on Leavers. Wars mean sacrifices. Hardship must be endured to restore the nation's pride. Those who question the war are suspect or traitors.
3/ I have no idea how to persuade people of the folly of such deluded nationalism. During WW2 millions of Germans continued to follow Hitler even as the promised 1000 year Reich crumbled into ruins. Extreme nationalism has that kind of perverse and terrible effect on human minds.

1/ Brexit English nationalism is angry, snarling, small-minded, embittered, deluded, xenophobic, devoid of almost all positive content and defined almost entirely by antagonism to what it sees as alien and foreign.
2/ How has English nationalism got into this mess? The first thing to note is that English nationalism has only recently re-emerged after being submerged in Britain and Empire. I'm a baby-boomer, until around 1990 I had no idea England even had a flag apart from the Union Jack.
3/ If you look at the crowd in the 1966 World Cup final, almost all the flags were Union flags. The English at that time couldn't really distinguish between England and the UK. The UK was a kind of greater England with curious Celtic appendages.

1/ Leavers have been told that a referendum victory makes all opposition to Brexit an attack on the democratic will of the people, thus demonising those of us exercising our normal democratic right to oppose Brexit as enemies of the people.
2/ So by portraying opponents of Brexit as enemies the "Will of the People" rhetoric sets up the struggle over Brexit not as a struggle within a democratic community united by shared rules, but as a war against anti-democratic enemies.
3/ So Leavers don't care that we think them hypocrites who would be outraged if Corbyn prorogued Parliament. They see the struggle over Brexit as a war in which rules don't apply. We are their enemies, not political opponents in a common rule-governed democratic community.
