@daniel_bilar I suspect that part of this is synthetic. Twitter before and after the timeline got "improved" with machine learning curation had a very different feel.
@daniel_bilar At one point, I heard people say "twitter is where you go to learn a stranger would be a good friend, facebook where you go to learn you hate your existing friends." At that point, FB had switched to ML curation, Twitter hadn't yet done it.
@daniel_bilar It does seem clear to me that if mass social media has any hope of working, it needs very powerful cultural norms in favor of civility, and unfortunately, the cultural norms on existing platforms (twitter especially) are not structured that way at all.
@daniel_bilar (I have seen a lot of people who don't even seem to understand what civility would consist of. I worry that after a few decades of exposure, large swaths of our society may forget what was learned over centuries about how to communicate with people who disagree with you.)
