/ Ok now I'm absolutely not sleeping tonight, so here's my best case for moving to NYC after we leave Mexico City sometime in the next year. Pls convince me not to do this
/ Start with alternatives: it's becoming clear to me that Mex City isn't our long-term home. As much as I love it, I'm not as excited about living abroad, learning languages, & meeting new ppl as I was in my 20's. I think constantly of home and want to be closer
/ Alternative #2: I also love SF Bay Area, but it's also not home. I started my career there and can visit often. Moving to SoCal end of next year was the plan, but it makes me feel kinda dead inside. SoCal suburbs are basically the opposite of everything I believe in
/ The question that's stuck in my mind is what would I do if I REALLY believed that Building a Second Brain was as important as I say it is? What would I do if I REALLY believed its time had come, that the world needs it badly, and that it’s my destiny to see it into the world?
/ Wouldn’t I go directly to the capital of the world, to the very beating heart of the idea economy? As much as I believe in remote work & digital nomad lifestyle, the past year has paradoxically taught me how critical it is to be with ppl in person
/ I believe BASB is reaching an inflection point where it no longer depends on me working alone at my desk, developing ideas. It depends on gaining access to key ppl, communities, orgs, events, media channels that are the viral carriers of new paradigms
/ I experienced this last month being in NYC for a week: in a matter of hours I could meet with people who could open doors that no amount of blogging, tweeting, emails, or Zoom calls could ever open. The value of IRL connection is rising, paradoxically, despite the internet
/ We're starting a full-fledged online school, putting all our time/money/focus/resources behind it, and it has a very different feel than my little lifestyle business. There's more at stake, much bigger ambitions, and the timeline matters much more as tech evolves ever faster
/ NYC is home to many of the ppl, orgs, communities, companies, cultures I need to test and validate my method, show that it can really change how even top performers work, and gain maturity. We could easily run a workshop every couple weeks and stress test every aspect
/ I feel more and more that I need to spend time with people, connecting & talking & coaching & receiving, rather than working away in isolation. I already have enough content to last a lifetime and notes to last two. Now what's needed is evangelization
/ The practical details are no less compelling: we have lots of friends there already, an existing professional network, easy flights to LA and everywhere, access to every kind of food/culture/experience imaginable, and the coaches and mentors we need to grow
/ This possibility terrifies me because it would require such a bolder vision than I've had before. The seriousness of the bet makes me feel very scared but also very alive. Feels way outside my comfort zone
/ But in a different way, I know that it's not a question of failure or success. BASB has its own momentum, opportunities abound everywhere, and I have the surreal sense that it would grow faster if I let go of control, and let other people take leadership roles
/ What do you think? What am I missing? What questions should I be asking? What false assumptions am I making?
