The thing about about corruption around the world is that it’s entrenched.
It’s built into the way governments work, it’s engrained into laws, and it’s rooted in the way we think.
Corruption that has no place in good governance is tied into every aspect of our system.
Getting rid of one leader is not enough to end corruption. It will take a rewiring of our laws and even our thinking to really make headway.
But after we get them in power we need to hold them accountable.
We need to be organized and willing to protest, vote out, and pressure even the “good guys” who don’t measure up.
A very small percentage of corruption today takes the form of plain bribes. Most corruption is legal today.
For example corporations have given money to tons of politicians on both sides for a long time.
But in truth corporations should not be able to give at all. They are made up of people. Those people should be able to give, up to a legal limit.
This is just one example of a mindset that must be shifted if we are to tackle corruption.
This entrenchment means powers that be can afford to take losses. They can afford to give in to protesters‘ demands, as long as the demands aren’t systematic.
They can afford to let the governor of Puerto Rico lose.
So we need to be set up for a long term fight. We need willingness to come out week after week. We need the creativity to find ways to truely pressure politicians and force them to change the system.
