Under Boris Johnson’s proposal for Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland’s economic relationship with the EU would most resemble

So far, a sizeable majority of you are wrong. Which three years into Brexit is slightly concerning.

If we really are closing in on the final landing zone, EU won’t want to waste a deal on a Parliament that won’t sign up to it (again).
So EU tentativeness at this stage very understandable.
I still think extension and general election more likely than deal being signed off by parliament at this stage. What happens then depends on outcome of general election ...

But who knows? I’m just speculating.

This (NI becoming an attractive place for manufacturers who want preferential access to UK and EU to set up) isn’t the issue.

EU already accepted this as a possibility when they offered UK the original NI-specific backstop, and it’s why NI business groups could live with it.
The EU’s concern is that products made *outside* of NI and subject to a lower tariff due to them having allegedly been sold to a consumer in Northern Ireland actually end up making their way into the rest of the EU either as an input into something else or just as is.

So FCA (dual customs border) just for NI a la @MESandbu & @RaoulRuparel? If Ireland and EU willing to accept it, could work.
Lots of people misunderstood the proposal at the time. The EU issue with FCA was that it’s difficult to know when final sale is UK or EU, which could give UK industries an unfair competitive advantage.
Actual process of running dual tariff regime fairly straightforward:

First, pay higher tariff/EU upon import, then

a) If importer demonstrates final sale in (lower tariff) UK claims rebate; or
b) trusted companies pay correct tariff on import dependent on point of final sale

Let’s remember how we got here. Many Tories who supported Boris Johnson believed his assurances that he wanted to get a deal with the EU. But over the five weeks since his election, his govt has done nothing of substance to engage. (Photo-ops with Merkel and Macron don’t count.)
If there had been any evidence that there were negotiations happening, it wd have been much more difficult to get MPs to block No Deal. EU also wd have supported govt narrative of positive progress in talks if the slightest reason to do so. EU wants to get this over with too.
But govt was clearly heading for No Deal by conscious choice and narrative of positive discussions with Merkel, Macron, Varadkar conspicuously not confirmed by other side. (Who, to repeat, have every incentive to find a deal and get it over with.)

Boris Johnson's big plan for Brexit?
1. Dip into the Withdrawal Agreement (that EU say is set in stone) to pick and choose bits like a chocolate selection box
2. Reach a special new deal with the EU, before a no deal exit on 31 October, to allow GATT24.

3. Solve the Irish border problem during the implementation period magically created by plucking that section out of the WA and getting the EU to sign it on its own.
4. Remain ambiguous about whether we pay the £39 billion or some other amount or not at all, and on timing.
5. Implement the plentiful technical solutions that BJ claims already exist for the Irish border.

But apart from that it's fairly sound.

My goodness! If you stood all Boris Johnson's Brexit unicorns on top of one another, they'd reach the Moon!
