This finding by the Senate Intelligence Committee is critical. Sit with it. It echoes the alarm bell I have been ringing for a year. Racism is a national security threat. Any effort to address Russian targeting of our election system must prioritize this.
This includes Congress' election integrity bills & Facebook's effort to define and redefine how it will address misinformation on the platform. If the African American community is the principal target, we must have a meaningful opportunity to shape the protections adopted.
Congress must understand that this is a civil rights issue. And the failure to act to protect our communities will be seen in that light. No other community has fought harder or sacrificed more to vote & have it count. Moreover, these are deliberate efforts to endanger young ppl.
These misinformation efforts seek to marshal opposition to #BlackLivesMatter groups and to activate a law enforcement response in opposition to Black activists. It is dangerous.
Call your congressperson and ask them what they intend to do to protect against this kind of information on social media platforms. 202-224-3121. And demand that Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram take aggressive action to deal w/misinformation.
Remember that it is not just foreign adversaries. Voter suppression tactics (including voter intimidation) and voting misinformation posted by domestic actors - including politicians - must also be removed from social media platforms.
