Can't Get This Out of My Head

I was driving earlier today and ended up listening to a fascinating interview of Megan Phelps-Roper, author of the book "Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church," on NPR. 1/
Megan spoke eloquently about how she ended up struggling with her religious convictions after exchanging a dialogue with a thoughtful person on Twitter about theology. The entire interview was respectful, thoughtful, illuminating and intelligent. 2/
But, I can't get over the WARNING delivered by the interviewer to the listeners of NPR at the start of the interview. He said (paraphrasing), "Due to the content and strong language in the program, people with young children in the room should switch to another station now." 3/
What language? Yes, there was a single word used only once, in context, that might be construed as unfit for young ears ('harlot'), but accompanying adults could explain if questioned. 4/
I can't shake the feeling that NPR grandees would much rather not expose the young to any discussion of religion, no matter how thoughtful. If my children were young, I would go out of my way to have them listen to this segment. What's happening to our society? 5/x
