I’m observing a peaceful protest of asylum seekers forced to live in squalid conditions in Mexico. They have blocked off Gateway International Bridge to protest the Remain in Mexico program. These are the people our government is keeping out #EndMPP
Mayor of #Matamoros is asking people to leave the bridge. Mexican military standing behind us. No one is listening to the protesters complaints of kidnapping and hunger. They’re just asking for protection.
Children started shouting, “We want to study, we want to study!” They’ve been unable to live safely in Mexico and live a normal life. Their entire lives, hopes, and dreams are on hold.
This is what #RemainInMexico looks like in #Matamoros. No running water, access to healthcare, lawyers, or schools. Tents have been gifted by humanitarian organizations from #BrownsvilleTX. There’s is nothing humane about this. This is why people are protesting.
This was the @CBP response to the peaceful protests against #RemainInMexico today. Shooting smoke bombs on the bridge, terrorizing our community on both sides of the border. And all as a show of “force.” It’s shameless and cowardly. There are children on the bridge.

Our staff is at the Gateway International Bridge between Brownsville and Matomoros this morning, as a group of asylum seekers blocked the bridge in peaceful protest of the “Migrant Protection Protocols” (MPP) program that forces them to live in squalid conditions in Mexico.
This protest is a clear illustration of the desperation migrants face as a result of @CBP’s violation of their rights.

Their peaceful demonstration demands that their rights, dignity, and safety be respected and demonstrates the need to immediately #EndMPP.
@CBP .@CBP has been carrying out its unlawful and cruel MPP policy in the Rio Grande Valley for months, returning vulnerable asylum seekers to Tamaulipas – a Mexican state that has the same State Department “do not travel’ advisory for all travelers as Syria.

Top Myths About #Asylum and why you should care:

Myth: Asylum seekers should file at US consulates in their home countries.

Reality: Asylum can only be sought at the border or inside the US. US consulates do not accept asylum applications.
Myth: Asylum seekers must present themselves at a port of entry.

Reality: The law (8 USC 1158) specifically says a person may apply for asylum whether they enter legally or not.

They can be technically prosecuted for unlawful entry, but that doesn't prevent asylum.
Myth: Asylum is only for political persecution, not for fear of gangs and terrorists.

Reality: There is NO requirement in the law that an asylum seeker's fear be politically based.

I've won many gang and terrorist related cases.

UPDATE: The Presidential proclamation barring certain non-citizens from seeking #asylum after crossing the Southern border is out. How will they limit it to the #MigrantCaravan? How much more illegal can this thing get?

(This thread is going to be a sequel to yesterday's on the "final interim rule" rushed into effect in anticipation of this proclamation, so you might want to read that one first.)

These #s appear to be the entire justification for the proclamation, and they badly need context. They may sound scary if you're new to the issue, but check out the overall historical picture & tell me this is a natl. emergency worthy of suspending a 4,000 year-old legal right

As a fmr immigration attorney let me be unambiguously clear. Crossing a boarder to claim asylum is *not* a crime; no under US or international law. Any child separated from a parent under that pretext is done so in direct contravention to the laws of the USA. ⚖ THREAD Pls RT.
If you came to the US without permission to apply for asylum, youmetjod of entry, whether legal or illegal *should* in no way effect your application process. Illegal entry is not a ground of inadmissibility for asylum applicants.
Unlike many other categories of applicants for immigration benefits, ppl seeking asylum in the US are not barred by having made an illegal entry; for example, sneaked across the U.S. border or overstaying a valid visa (one of the top ways people are in the country illegall).

Here are just a few of many reasons.
(1) CRIMINALIZATION of unlawful presence in the United States: White supremacy writ into law. For past 228 years, simply *being in U.S.* w/o permission was a civil offense w/no consequence other than deportation.
(NB: This was quickly rejected in 2005, but much more likely now)
(2) ONE HUNDRED THIRTY BILLION UNITED STATES TAXPAYER DOLLARS to fully militarize the Mexican border.

Even @Heritage, which otherwise mostly likes the bill, balked at this as "hard to justify." You don't say.
