The discussion that caste and Jaati are different is misleading in Indian context. Let me explain in this thread.
One, it hardly matters if caste is Portuguese or Arabic word. It also hardly matters if it is called Jaati or Varnashrama or Varna Vyavastha in local lingo. +

What matters is that crores have been living with their micro identities for last several centuries, despite facing same common threats that see them as same preys. When Tyagi is murdered, Tyagis protest in Delhi. When Pasi is gangraped, Pasi community alone helps. +

The Jaatis that are stronger resist for a longer while. This is perceived as if Jaati was strength. But eventually, all succumb. And a great civilization with greatest talent was ransacked by few uncivilised invaders. See what happened in Kashmir despite Hindu rule since 1830. +

In IIM, we all took pride in our respective Halls and would even compete. That was healthy because eventually we knew Halls are secondary, what matters is that we are IIM brand. In Hindus, reverse has been true for centuries. +

It gets even worse because allocation of Jaati is hardcoded into Dwija with special divine gifts, Shudras who are told that they and their children are and will be born only to serve Dwija, and Antyaja or outcastes who must not even mingle with rest except cleaning shit. +

Jaati works relatively better for Dwija and even Antyaja don't complain and adjust to their destiny of born inferior. But it starts destroying entire system moment some Ghaznis and Ghoris start invading. And Antyaja have become 25% of population that Dwija are unaware of +

It is true that Jaati acts as last straw of identity and resists attack on faith. But a straw is weak in itself. How long can it resist. Remember the moral story of one stick Vs pack of sticks? +

Be proud of family and ancestors. That is a virtue. But if that pride makes you ignore pride of other families, then it becomes a problem. This is exactly what is wrong with birth-based Jaati or caste or Varnashrama or whatever.+

Who is anyone to enforce on my family that we were born only to clean shit, and prohibited from Janeu or Vedas? This is exactly what Puri Shankaracharya brand Dharma believes in. He may be proud because he is at top by his own words. Why shud a Chandal be proud of such Dharma? +

There is no British conspiracy in Varnashrama trash. It was an anti-Vedic system that bigots nurtured for own benefit or foolishness, whatever and every invader including British exploited to their gain. Till today, we live as separate Jaatis and tolerate such bigots as gurus +

Another nuisance of Jaativaad is about conversion. Invaders convert at will exploiting this silly Jaati discrimination and associated frauds in name of Dharma. And Hindus bang head over whether they can be brought back, and if yes, what should be Jaati +

Just to give example, Kashmir became Hindu state in 1830 and had full autonomy from British. Hari Singh Nalwa wanted to bring back converts to Hinduism. Bigots opposed. And hence in 2019, an Adil Dhar bombs Pulwama and Ashish Dhar lives outside Kashmir and abuses Agniveer. +

Another example. Puri Shankaracharya started temple program to arrest conversion of lower castes and rehabilitation of converts. Problem is that, they are polluted. Hence these temples are supposed to do everything except Janeu, Vedas and other special things reserved for pure +

Outcome: Orissa, despite being center of the most powerful person on earth - Shankaracharya of biggest Peeth who has right to overrule even PM of greatest nation - is hub of conversion activities. It is so easy to blame all on conspiracy and allow free run to converters +

Truth is that birth based Jaativaad is a fraud. Jaatis naturally emerge due to professions, geography, culture, and it's good to be proud of them. But when you issue fatwas of purity with that, it makes Kashmir of 2019 out of Kashmir of Rishi Kashyap.
