The thing is, Barr’s been saying this stuff for decades, and worse. But it got zero press during his confirmation. Christian extremism gets to fly under the radar in America. An anti-democratic movement hiding in plain sight.
How many of you heard about this before his confirmation? And how many of you were told he was a respectable DC establishment figure?

Trump is an autocratic, kleptocratic, white supremacist, serial sexual predator with a personality disorder. He makes it all so damn obvious. But he gets away with it anyway, because this is a white supremacist, patriarchal psuedo-democracy with a culture of denial.
Trump isn’t just a symptom of what wrong with the GOP, or with the press. He’s a symptom of what’s wrong with whiteness and patriarchy. He’s a symptom of everything broken and neglected in our electoral and legal systems.
Trump is a symptom of the fact this country was created as a minority rule system and remains one. You don’t get Trump in a country that wasn’t already steeped in white male supremacist propaganda, lawlessness and denialism.

I prefer Warren over a lot of the other candidates, but let’s not pretend she has a monopoly on big structural change.
Electing a woman President is big structural change.

Electing an LGBT President is big structural change.

Electing a Hispanic, Black or Asian President is big structural change.

If you can’t see this, you understand America less than Trump voters do.
Not that other candidates don’t also have big structural *policy* changes in their platforms too! I just see a lot of my fellow straight white progressives/liberals falling into the same old trap of focusing on a certain set of issues in a certain sort of way. It’s not right.

There is a research letter that was published today in Tobacco Control. CNN did a story about it, which is now running on every local news station in America. After seeing a few of these stories, I read the paper. And I have some things to say.
First of all. No one knows what they're reporting on. This isn't like journalists not reading past an abstract or press release. They literally don't have a clue what the study is about. Not even a vague idea.
And apparently every newsroom's solution to this problem was to guess.
The study is by Robert Jackler a Stanford doctor who, by serendipity, managed to translate a compulsion to hoard tobacco marketing memorabilia into some sort of folk hero status in the anti-smoking movement.
