So we've got a general election in #Spain today. Socialist PM Pedro Sánchez is the frontrunner, although it's not certain that he will be able to put up a ruling majority. Here's a thread with a few thoughts on #28A:

What's new?

a) The Socialists are set to win, a first since 2008
b) Five national parties will get over 10% of the vote
c) The far-right will enter parliament, a first since 1982
d) The conservative PP faces an assault on the right not seen since the UCD collapsed in the 80s

2/
The campaign has been heavily polarized between left and right.

The right (PP + Ciudadanos + Vox) has focused on #Catalonia, hammering Sánchez's credibility and accusing him of being ready to cut the country into pieces for the sake of remaining in office.

Yes, but the #GOP has been in selective revolt against the rule of law for decades, and Max Boot seems to have been OK with that until now. Take Bob Barr's late 1980s work covering up the Iran-Contra scandal; the "Contras", who got $ from illegal arms sales to Iran profits....
2) were both waging a campaign of terrorism against a sovereign nation (Nicaragua) but also making $ by smuggling drugs into the US - which the CIA knew about and that set off the crack cocaine epidemic that devastated America's inner cities. But, of course, that devastation...
3) was as much about the US legal system's response to crack cocaine as to the impact of the drug. The draconian penalties attached to use & sale of crack cocaine, as opposed to the relatively mild penalties for powdered cocaine use, meant that an entire generation...
