Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price says “absolutely nothing can justify” what happened in #AtatianaJefferson shooting, reiterating, “absolutely nothing.” She also speaks against the police department’s move to release pictures of her gun in the home, saying that was “irrelevant.”
The mayor says city leadership has already put into motion a plan to bring in “a third party panel of national experts” to investigate. “Mere words are not enough. We are taking action.”
Interim Forth Worth police chief says the officer resigned this morning, but would have been fired if he had not for violating the use of force policy, deescalation policy and for unprofessional conduct. He could face criminal charges.
Fort Worth police have submitted a preliminary case to the FBI for federal investigators to review whether the shooter, no longer a Fort Worth police officer, could face civil rights violations.
Fort Worth police chief says that use of force would only have been appropriate if the officer was being fired upon ... if “they were actively firing upon you at the time.”
Chief says there will be an update on possible criminal charges tomorrow.
Aaron Dean is the former Fort Worth police officer who shot and killed #AtatianaJefferson.
Chief says Aaron Dean resigned before he could cooperate, has not been questioned by police. Police were supposed to interview him this morning.
Chief says most officers have said, “This isn’t how we operate,” and understand the gravity of this, understand how this has eroded public trust in police.
