Press conference thread about the shooting death of #AtatianaJefferson by a Fort Worth police office.

Mayor Betsy Price, interim chief Ed Kraus and City Manager David Cook will speak.

Mayor Price: We are all heartbroken today. Atiatiana was an amazing, smart woman who was unjustly taken from her family ... I cannot imagine anything worse and I am so sorry ... there is nothing that can justify what happened #AtatianaJefferson

Price apologizes to James Smith, who called non-emergency. She apologizes to #AtatianaJefferson's young nephew who was in the room when she was killed.

Price: The gun was irrelevant, she was in her own home.

Mayor says that #AtatianaJefferson was a victim and had the right to have a gun in her own home.

Price: We are taking immediate action ... city leadership has set in place a third party panel of national experts to review this department (Cook will specifically speak to this later)

Kraus: Criminal and internal investigations are ongoing.

Internal affairs responded to the shooting and observed the on scene investigation. #AtiatianaJefferson

BREAKING: The officer who killed #AtiatianaJefferson has terminated his employment this morning, before Chief Kraus said he was scheduled to fire the officer.

Kraus said his intention to fire the officer for violating policies, including the use of force policy. He's no longer has the protection of state civil service laws.

His name is Aaron Dean.

Dean was commissioned as a licensed peace officer last year in April.

Criminal investigation: There will be an update no later than tomorrow. The FBI has also been briefed for possible civil rights violations.

David Cook: Atiatiana's death should have never happened. A third party group will come in to the department to review current police policies and training practices.

Cook: Currently, we are reaching out to experts in the field and once we finalize the plan, we will present that to the city council in the next few weeks. #AtiatianaJefferson

Kraus: FWPD has reached out to the Texas Rangers to discuss them being handed the investigation. Nothing has been finalized. This has been submitted to the FBI.

Why were photographs of the gun released?

Kraus says in hindsight it was a bad thing to do. It was to show there was a weapon involved "however we're homeowners in the state of Texas" and we should be able to act as #AtiatianaJefferson did.

Will criminal charges be filed against the officer? Kraus said there will be an update on the criminal investigation tomorrow. #AtiatianaJefferson

Kraus said Smith's call was not taken as a check welfare call. It was taken as an open structure call and it would be appropriate to park far away. #AtiatianaJefferson

The other officer who was with Aaron Dean is being treated as a witness to the shooting, Kraus says. #AtiatianaJefferson

What do you tell residents who don't trust police, Kraus is asked.

"I tell them I get it. No one looked at that video and thought there's no doubt this officer acted inappropriately," Kraus said. More training for officers is needed and will be done.

Kraus said Aaron Dean, the officer who shot #AtiatianaJefferson, has not been cooperative with investigators. He has not taken any questions from Kraus.

Kraus: Most officers I have encountered over the last couple of days have said, 'Chief, this is not how we operate.'
