Recently found my 12-year-old diary. It was as you would expect of 12-year-old me - "Everyone's such FOOLS, how can I be expected to live with these IDIOTS" etc. But then on one date, it simply read: "Just seen a film called Robocop. This is the greatest day of my life."
There is a whole cultural way of life for kids which involved looking up which films had a mature content warning in the paper, then setting them to record on the VCR - a piece of technology no parent at the time could understand. It is now lost.
Funnily enough it was an inadvertent way into lots of properly classic filmmakers - Cronenberg, Lynch etc. Late night Channel 2 and Channel 4 was a fucking wonderland of weird shit.
