1/Here's a super-interesting article about how U.S. immigration has changed since 2010.

2/Immigration surged in the year after Trump's election, but has since dropped a lot.

People are still coming in, but at less than half the rate they were before.

3/The decline in the number of foreign students is especially noteworthy. This is quite bad for our country.

4/However, here's a good trend: The foreign-born are diffusing throughout the country. Leaving blue states and going to red states. (This may also reflect more immigration going directly to red states.)

5/Which places are gaining foreign-born residents?

Texas metros

Florida

The Southeast

The Pacific Northwest

much of the Rust Belt

6/Two other longer-term trends:

1. Immigration is shifting toward educated immigrants.

2. Immigration is shifting from Latin America to Asia.

7/Taken together, these facts imply that Trump's immigration restrictions and xenophobic rhetoric are going to mostly prevent educated Asian immigrants from coming to the U.S.

8/However, the diffusion of the foreign-born to Trump-voting areas suggests that the country will not be regionally divided into white states and diverse states.

Instead, every state will have diverse pockets and pockets that remain homogeneous.

9/Trump has slowed America's racial and ethnic diversification, but the deed is mostly done.
