THREAD.
My mother has stage IV cancer. She is winning her incredibly difficult fight but every day brings its uncertainties. And when you are on chemo, your body is totally wrecked. So much so that even bending over to pick up something you have dropped can be excruciating.
One of the worst side effects she has experienced is the INTENSE non stop nausea that renders her completely immobile & makes her feel like she is on death's door.
One of the prescriptions she takes for her nausea helps somewhat. But even it is not strong enough to beat chemo.
I went to get her RX the other day and I went to pay for it, the woman tells me, $30. I think to myself, OK, that is great. I wish it was less but it is affordable for me and her. Then I ask out of curiosity, is this the price with her insurance? She is on Medicare.
The pharmacist says, Yes, it is. And look what it would be without it.
My jaw fell open. Keep in mind this is not my first rodeo with Rxs since she was diagnosed. I know the racket being run. But for a simple nausea drug, a GENERIC drug, if she didnt have Medicare, this Rx would eat up, LITERALLY 85% of her entire fixed monthly income.
This is unconscionable. This is highway robbery. What do people without Medicare do? I know what they do. They go bankrupt. They suffer needlessly. They die. Just so someone somewhere up the chain can add another crystal goblet to their collection of glassware aboard their yacht.
I was fuming when I saw this.
I grow angry when I think what could be if she didnt have Medicare to rely on.
What I show you here in this thread is the reality for millions of Americans. That we all passively go along with this current set up is completely beyond me.
I would like to add that when I made this purchase, the pharmacist said to me, as I stood there, mouth agape - "I know. It is so unreasonable. It is so unreasonable." And we both shook our head.
This was a surreal moment that will probably stick with me for my entire life.
