I can almost feel the excitement of the political journalists, "we've got something to cover that isn't Brexit..."
Meanwhile the UK is one day closer to Brexit with no-deal with the EU, which also means no-deal with Japan, China aren't too happy with us, and perhaps this isn't the day to rely on the US for generous terms reuters.com/article/us-usa… #winning
Those EU talks don't seem to be going well either, as we are once again accused of being caught playing divide and rule (we have yet to learn that outside the EU divide and rule of Member States is incredibly difficult, the Commission ensures this)

Unfortunately but not surprisingly yesterday's trade debate in the Commons yielded little in terms of new information - apparently 8 months after announcement the DIT Strategic Trade Advisory Group may soon become operational - as for other matters... 1/5
We learn that MPs have an ISDS (investor State Dispute Settlement) obsession which given we already have 90-odd such agreements and no cases lost, hardly any brought, seems disproportionate and liable to distract from more important issues 2/5
As Barrie Gardiner briefly said, we are no clearer knowing why we want trade deals. @MarcusFysh mentioned selling insurance services in the US, but this is largely a sub-federal issue usually excluded from US trade deals. 3/5

There’s a trade debate in the Commons today. Only one question really needs to be asked of the government, which is why they have not published a trade strategy. Still if you need more, like what we should know by now… 1/ thread (long)
One of the Government’s stated priorities is a trade deal with the US. Michael Gove says we will not accept US food standards in the UK. The US will not do a deal on this basis. A US deal will also be hugely controversial. Why are we therefore proceeding? 2/
Another stated priority is joining CPTPP. This would also require the acceptance of US food standards. Joining CPTPP or a US trade deal would also mean the UK leaving the European standards community. What assessment has been made of the impact of this? 3/

Government negotiating mistakes, part 94, the failure to be collaborative. There's a lot of no deal tariff talk, and various folk including myself speculating. But insofar as I can tell no proper off the record briefing for anyone, and not much real consultation.
Such consultation and briefing gives you a group of people who even if they're not happy with everything will at least understand the rationale, and point out some of the reasoning. They will also help point out potential flaws, and help amplify messages.
This secrecy has hurt the UK in Brussels, since businesses, think tanks etc are regularly asked about UK positions and can't clearly say what they are. Confusion spreads. It also hurts the Government in the UK by giving the appearance of chaos whether true or not.

1, One of the pernicious features of this deal (and indeed EU membership) is the non-regression clauses on environmental and labour rules. It;s one of the most obnoxious and offensive facets of the EU. (#Brexit thread)
2. We are told by remainers that leavers are howwid towies who want to slash our workers rights and go back to polluting beaches. That's because your average self styled progressive europhiles are children. It's a totally infantile narrative.
3. Starting with workers rights, they are as much for the facilitation of the integrationist agenda, not least so they can replace workers with cheaper ones from abroad on an industrial scale. Why bother to train?

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
