Welcome to Hon @TraceyMartinMP at #LIANZA19
The vision for this year’s conference asks you all to share, gift, reciprocate and collaborate using the elements of vā feiloa’i (respectful relationships), māfana (warmth), ofa (love), mālie (humour) through talanoa (shared dialogue).
@TraceyMartinMP Minister Martin is the first minister to open the LIANZA conference in 9 years.
Librarians hold the knowledge so it's a brave government that ignores librarians! say the minister.
@TraceyMartinMP it's a privilege to warmly welcome delegates from the Pacific, the USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK, Australia and from all around New Zealand!
@TraceyMartinMP "I am delighted to be here and thank LIANZA for inviting me. A lot of work has obviously gone into the planning of this conference and I am sure it will a wonderful event."
@TraceyMartinMP Words play such an important role in our well being. As collectors of stories libraries play an important part in community well being.
@TraceyMartinMP As the Minister whose portfolios include Children, Education, Internal Affairs and Seniors, I am greatly vested in what happens at this conference that will benefit the welfare of our families and communities.
@TraceyMartinMP I am delighted to tell you that the ‘Pacific Virtual Museum’ Pilot Programme is under way.

@TraceyMartinMP The Australian Govt together with @NLNZ and the @nlagovau are excited to work with colleagues from across the Pacific to develop a shared online place enabling Pacific peoples to connect with their cultural heritage from around the world.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau New Zealand has persistent and intergenerational low levels of literacy in some communities. Not all children, young people and their communities have the same opportunities to develop a love of reading.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau In Communities of Readers, @NLNZ ’s Services to Schools will work with three to five communities to strengthen reading engagement through reading for pleasure.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau Here in Tāmaki Makaurau the National Library’s collaboration with Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei is the beginning of a respected relationship with local iwi which has delivered the magic of He Tohu Tāmaki.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau The learning experience provides educators and learners with greater knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, He Whakaputanga, and the Women’s Suffrage Petition, connecting them with local and national stories.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei is one of the first of local iwi to share their stories. ‘Place’ is very important to this project, which is why it is important to gather more stories relevant to Tāmaki and continue building the Crown Maori partnership, a founding principle of He Tohu.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau Next year will see the 110th year of LIANZA in operation. And over that time the way our people interact with library services has changed and continues to change.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau There’s already much good work underway to help our people gain equitable access to information, language literacy, digital literacy, information literacy, and media literacy, access to information and support to manage and protect their privacy in the digital world.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau The new relationship agreement between LIANZA and the National Library signed earlier this year at Tūranga, the central library in Christchurch, lays a great foundation for further discussion and direction of how they will work together.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau And it was also the same collaboration, supported by the government that saw the successful bid to hold the IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Auckland, which will now take place in 2022.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau These are just a few examples of how libraries have laid a great foundation of work and the future promises much excitement and many challenges.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau The future for the well-being of our people and our communities lies in greater collaboration – between families and communities, with cultural institutions, across government agencies, with private sector and with other governments.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau The future for the well-being of our people and our communities lies in greater collaboration – between families and communities, with cultural institutions, across government agencies, with private sector and with other governments.
@TraceyMartinMP @NLNZ @nlagovau And in doing so, we all can, through every gain we make, play a small part in a much bigger assignment: to make life better for all New Zealanders. You all have a role to play in this!
