Green parties have made historic gains, according to the latest forecast.

Overall, the left and the centre have gained ground, prompting speculation about a reshuffle of the multi-party government.

These are the present seven members of the government (federal council). Two each from the Swiss People's Party (far right), Social Democrats (left), FDP/Liberals (centre-right) and one Christian Democrat (centre-right).

I've been trying to find an answer to a question about trade in goods between Northern Ireland & the Republic under the new version of the protocol (backstop/frontstop).

The focus has been on trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland and how customs is arranged.

If the UK & EU cannot agree on a free trade agreement (aka "no deal") and since there are no customs procedures for the Irish border:

1. What happens to butter made in Northern Ireland and sold in the Republic? It's essentially duty-free even though the EU has a high tariff

2/4
2. What happens to butter made in the Republic and sold in Northern Ireland? Similarly it escapes the UK tariff of €60.5 or €73.8 per 100kg.

3. What happens to French butter shipped to Northern Ireland via Dublin? No duty charged either?

okay, Austria has elections today and I thought I'd give my international followers a bit of a heads up

first off the parties:

SPÖ: center-left
ÖVP: opportunist, currently center-right, but could change quickly
NEOS: lolbertarians basically
Greens: far-left
FPÖ: true right
after a scandal in may, new elections were called

the FPÖ lost due to the scandal, but regained a bit, the SPÖ also lost some points, the ÖVP initially made gains, but they slowly dripped away, the NEOS only had a short burst, and the Greens have made good gains
this is the latest opinion poll from today

the last week has been the media bashing the FPÖ constantly, coming up with ever new ways to defame them, but it seems this had little to no impact

opinion polls are usually fairly accurate here

THREAD: @afneil needs reminding that although his arguments regarding the EU referendum result and leaflets are well intentioned, they are *legally* incorrect.

@A50Challenge have made this perfectly clear.
@afneil @A50Challenge 1. Andrew Neil has suggested that the leaflet the government sent to every household said: “we will implement your decision”. This in itself is correct. But leaflets do not constitute law. He has clearly confused political and parliamentary sovereignty.
@afneil @A50Challenge 2. The Government maintains that the 2016 EU Referendum was a decision to leave the EU – a decision “by the people”. This is untrue. The Referendum was advisory only- the Supreme Court has ruled that neither the govt nor the people are legally entitled to make such a decision.
