1/ Detailing my journey as I learn about homelessness in SF.

I don't have answers. I am just looking to learn from others. If you have opposing points of view, please lmk.
2/ One of the things we were most surprised by and discussed was the potential influx of elderly homeless people that will not just hit SF but nationwide: "UCSF statistics show that in 1990, only 11% of the homeless population nationwide was 50 or older. Today it’s 50%."
3/ In San Francisco, the top causes of homelessness reported by homeless people are:

26% - Job loss
18% - Substance abuse
13% - Eviction
12% - Being kicked out
8% - Mental Illness
5% - Divorce or breakup

Why do insurance companies make you file claims with snail mail? Who solves this?

Legitimately asking for myself: I don't want to fill out a form, find an envelope/stamp, mail it, and then have to remember to check up on it to ensure I saved money.
Is it just Cigna being archaic and all the other insurance co let you file claims electronically?

I tried to buy an ENS domain. The state of things made me sad:

1. Metamask & Coinbase don't interoperate. I couldn't find a web3 coinbase browser.

2. When I tried to send crypto to Metamask, this happened: "You are currently unable to buy and sell digital currency on Coinbase."
Are things better than they seem or is it really this challenging right now?
Here I thought I was in control of my money :(

If you use Figma or Notion a lot, you're in CA, and find your browser sluggish due to them, I'd love for you to try Mighty in a few weeks.

The extent to which YIMBY folks have shifted the discourse over the last few years is impressive. Feels like they have the moral high ground and momentum now nationally. Credit to @SonjaTrauss for her persistence.
Of course, some would argue that the moral debate is just a proxy for the economic tug-of-war between renters and owners. Perhaps a statistical analysis would show that there are now more information workers on the renter side than the owner side. That would explain the shift.
Still feels like it will be too little, too late for San Francisco. Huge lag time between when the law changes and when buildings are move-in ready. The US as a whole is far behind China here, and falling further behind. Compare this from 2012 to SF 2019:

This is a good overview of the promise and perils of Mid-Market development. SF, like much of the country, is gripped by the meth/opioid/fentanyl crisis, and how to address that, nobody knows. projects.sfchronicle.com/2019/mid-marke…
The "lock them all up" strategy has been debunked, thankfully. But we haven't really made the turn to what another solution might be. Likely more harm reduction, more $ to *effective* addiction intervention, cracking down on China over fentanyl imports, supportive housing...
At nearby Walgreens, saw a couple of guys, totally zonked out of their minds, were clearly (and pretty ineptly) trying to shoplift everything. Security and the clerks were just standing by. No point in calling cops or risking themselves. Cops wont show for > $5K. Not great.

Everyone in SF knows that we have a terrible homelessness problem, but almost no one knows the basic facts about the ~7500 people who don't have a home in our city. For example, the number of homeless has been stable for years: hsh.sfgov.org/wp-content/upl…
70% of homeless people in SF were previously housed in SF, contradicting the "busing" myth that our homeless problem is the result of other states passing out Greyhound tickets at homeless shelters. And 55% have lived in the city for more than ten years.
Despite massive increases in the cost of housing in SF over the last 4 years, the number of homeless has been remarkably stable. This is actually success for SF's homeless services, in contrast to other West Coast cities which have seen massive spikes in homeless population.
