Divestment simply refers to the sale of assets in a company. CalPERS made the decision to sell its holdings in CoreCivic and GEO Group. Ergo, CalPERS divested.
I'll go ahead and @CalPERS and their chief of public affairs, @WayneBDavis, on this one.
On Friday, CalPERS told one union they decided to cut their investments in CoreCivic and GEO Group based on a 30 day portfolio review.

Now they're saying they made the decision after their new CIO initiated a comprehensive review of their investments back in January.🤔
H’oooboy, looks like we might need to take out the crayons and break this one down, folks.

Woah, weird. I've just learned that I actually had nothing to do with CalPERS divesting. Apparently this was all the work of @CFA_News (according to them). Can someone help me figure out what I've been spending my time doing these past 15 months? My memory is suddenly fuzzy.
@CFA_News Would it be bad form to do a quick side-by-side comparison of the resolution CFA passed vs the ones that were introduced at other unions? (hint: they were all drafted by the same person). Or maybe those call logs where I had to convince them why they should support the campaign?
@CFA_News Or maybe those emails where they kept asking what they should say during public comment because they didn't have a clue?

My favorite part abt this? @CoreCivic & @GEOGroup’s statements; they’re clearly struggling 2 realize that all the facts & info that formed the basis 4 this decision were taken directly from the cos’ own SEC filings, depositions, & internal emails lawyers obtained thru discovery
Also, y’all r still using basically the same statements u provided n response 2 CalSTRS’ divestment. At least put a little effort in? I mean, my god, if I can sit thru ur CEOs droning on & on n quarterly shareholder 📞 at least have the decency 2 update ur sad excuse 4 a comeback

Today, I marched w/ hundreds to @Thrivent.

Why?

Movement to kidnap children, separate families, cage human beings and dehumanize our immigrant neighbors isn’t just about a racist president.

It’s about financial institutions making millions off investments in these practices
Two of the largest companies running private detention centers inprisoning families on border are CoreCivic & GEO Group.

They are profiting from detentions, separations, deaths & camps.

@Thrivent, according to recent FEC filings have almost 4 million invest in those companies
While hatred and bigotry readied the soil for the inhumane treatment at these concentration camps the water and sunlight providing nourishment for these camps to flourish is the cowardess and profit first mentality of multimillion dollar companies like @Thrivent

In Alabama marijuana possession is generally a Class A misdemenour punishable by a year's prison & $6,000 fine.

In 2016, black people there were 4X as likely as whites to be arrested for misdemenour & felony possession.

1/ A year ago in #California the work of #TheGeoGroup & #CoreCivic became apparent: they had been contributing to legislators for years, and operating private #immigrant detention facilities that the @ACLU & other accused of abuse.

Who accepted the money? Progressive Democrats.
2/ @TheGEOGroup & @CoreCivic understand how politics work: give money to the party in power. Hundreds of thousand to @California_Dem Party. Tens of thousands to Governor @JerryBrownGov All but one border-region legislator has taken their money. When they were finally caught...
3/ Once caught- some angrily attacked people who questioned their acceptance of private #prison money. They continue sharing it with family & friends, to fund campaigns, curry favor & develop more political power.
