this is a good explanation (from a solid book called understanding comics by scott mccloud) of the power of using simplified imagery, this is a huge part of why i gravitated towards my own style + certain art forms that reach deeper into the mind of the viewer (imo) than realism
its somewhat platonic in that ur brain has an image of a bird in it thats unlike what ur eye sees when it sees a bird. if ur a visual artist u can speak to + manipulate this part of the brain rather than the part hooked up to the eyes that registers photographic style information
this is something some sufic and islamic artists dealt with (as well), flipped to be about theology instead of the individuals mind, but thats not really my area of expertise. sometimes they talk about drawing a horse as god sees a horse, not as an individual man sees one.

as the single male populace is once again engaging in “no nut november” (honorable) i feel obliged to point out that looking at or having around art of women that is beautiful but not sexual can help rewire your brain to not immediately associate “image of woman” with “sex”.
like most guys i used to watch porn on and off for a long time. i obviously highly recommend stopping. you can actually feel your brain rewire when you stop using it. if you watch porn at all it definitely effects more of your everyday perception of things than you think.
also (this isnt [the] reason to stop its just a reason to stop) when u eventually do have sex theres a huge difference in it if ur masterbating or not. not be vulgar, just saying it 100% spills over into what would otherwise be your normal sexual life. seen both sides of the coin

Here's a brief personal story. A few months ago, I started working out again, as part of my PTSD recovery. Yesterday I was in my best physical shape since leaving prison five years ago.
In a past life, I enjoyed martial arts. I actually have black belt degrees in three of them. After the whole political prisoner/refugee experience between and the PTSD that came with it, martial arts became... a PTSD trigger. I couldn't work out.
And when I say "I couldn't work out", I mean that my body would send a signal to my brain at some level I can't control and I'd have a dissociative episode and an upswell of gutteral grief. The physical activity I enjoyed became a PTSD trigger, and that sucked big time.

What struck me most in the climate change report is how our public understanding of climate change is *WAY* too narrow. The report paints a picture of climate change pervading literally *every* sphere of life. (1/thread)
Yes, it's more intense storms and rising ocean levels and increasing heat. But it's *way* more than that. So I made a list of what’s to come, according to the report. Warning: It's very, very long. Here we go:
- worse milk quality
- more heat exhaustion, heat-stroke and heart attacks
- reduced harvests of shellfish
- shortened downhill and cross-country ski seasons
- more stress on bridge integrity
- increased US international development assistance programs costs
