(Photos @LauredeMontalem). 3/

Brief thoughts on the meaning of words: #diversity, #equity, and #inclusion. (1)
The use of the word “diversity” to mean “homogeneity of thought” was a brilliant and highly effective strategy to silence and shame different opinions. (2)
Same goes for “equity,” meaning making up for past injustices, as opposed to “equality,” which means treating people equally. (3)

So i took my time to transcribe (99.9% ad verbum) Elrufai's interview with Mansur Sokoto in the video shared by @AriyoAristotle

Yes, the same one Aunty @KadariaAhmed and uncle @DrJoeAbah said i should get a translator for or pay N50k to them for a transcript.

So it is #perplexing to read #newsreports that @TheJusticeDept is searching for a #path to #inclusion of the #citizenship #question.

Why is this a #puzzle for you?
The @uscensusbureau must do the best it can to accurate #ascertain #both the #number of #persons and the #number of #citizens.

FYI, a question currently before the Superior Court of Ontario regarding the 2018 #Toronto Municipal Elections to be answered is:

“Whether the Election is valid?”

There was already a ruling in the Superior Court that the Clerk shall retain the ballots.

#TOpoli #electionTO
#Toronto’s City Clerk is required to answer the following questions:

👉🏿 the Clerk is to publicly address how she verifies that each ballot cast is assigned to the right Candidate & what happens when votes are not rightly accounted for;

#TOpoli #electionTO #transparency

1/…
👉🏿 the Clerk is to to publicly explain how #democracy is ensured in our elections in Toronto;

👉🏿 the Clerk is to publicly explain what equitable measures are in place to ensure democracy in #Toronto Elections;

Great thread. Parts of it I agree with, others make me concerned.

Let’s unpack.
Clearly, the point of the discussion offers an opportunity to widen the tech pipeline; to ensure accomplished black CS HBCU students get their foot in the door. Critical. Essential.
However, it also offers a question that @peterme brought up: so, is Stanford then just an expensive trade school?

On this #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay, inspired to hear @lynnekjolso talk about #Inclusivity @Microsoft. One of the best keynotes I've attended i recent years!

Being #inclusive is such a win-win, yet many businesses don't pay enough attention.

#GAAD @CdnMarketing #CMAevents
So many great takeaways from the session.

"#Diversity is I am different.
#Inclusion is I matter."

~Kathleen Hall, CVP Brand, Advertising and Research @Microsoft
"Inclusive culture drives innovation.
Inclusive products remove barriers.
Inclusive #marketing resonates."

I'm a few years behind the curve; y'all still do follow trains?

Well, I'm starting one. Let's do one about #equitydesign.

@albanvillamil asked if I knew people, places, and tools for equity and design, and I wanted everyone to know everyone.

Spread the word! (1/million)
That being said, like equity work, this isn't (and arguably can't be) the definitive

Equity is a verb, like @_ChristineOrtiz says, so my hope is this is only the beginning.
I tried to get everyone's resources and descriptions correctly, but if there's anything wrong, feel free to correct me! (Crit's in our blood, right?)

Feel free to add, amend, include, and let's get to know each other. Cool? Cool.

Dear Parties involved in the upcoming Federal Elections in Canada,

Many Canadians, including myself, are non-partisan. Feigning to hold ‘non-partisan public events/townhalls’ doesn’t fool us. We see that your meetings are stacked with your Party. Be honest; act with integrity.
If you indeed want to serve the Public’s interests don’t be afraid to be challenged by the Public. Integrity is lacking. Don’t have preplanned ‘random’ questions framed as statements attacking your opponent- all of this makes you disingenuous- making it harder to believe you.
Integrity, accountability, an inclusive plan is missing in Government. Get to your plan that secures a future where we all can live & thrive.

Stop wasting our time with the childish antics and politricks. Get to your plan.

It's a contradiction to insist Muslim women need to be 'saved' and that feminism will 'liberate' them and at the same time when Muslim women seek choice like any other consumer, and actively want to take part in sports and public life, they are denied bbc.co.uk/news/world-eur…
This brand is happy to sell the sports hijab in Morocco and make money from it there, but won't stand up for its brand and its consumers in France
Millennial consumers are increasingly expecting brands to act as a force for good and take a world view which rejects racism. Instead, this brand is perpetuating racism by privileging the consumers who shout a lot rather than doing the right thing

1/10 I am saddened and annoyed at this new position. This is basically a slap in the face to every education assistant in the province. #bced #inclusion #specialeducation #bcpoli #SD43 @CUPEBC @cupenat tricitynews.com/news/new-coqui…
2/10 Supporting all students in the classroom is the role of the education assistant. Many have taken 2-years of coursework to prepare for the challenging work.
3/10 Education assistant work eroded over the 16-year reign of terror unleashed by Christy and her crew. Services were stripped from vulnerable students and EAs had hours reduced.

Digging into some of the literature in advance of a talk I am giving next week on LGBTQ+ and STEM. #lgbtSTEM

Will tweet some 'highlights' from the literature: mdpi.com/2076-0760/6/1/…
LGBTQ+ rights in STEM are not better with age, and it is not just about waiting for the older generation to die off. #lgbtSTEM

mdpi.com/2076-0760/6/1/…
There's a great graph in the paper by Cech and Pham. This is the "workplace experience" of employees in US based STEM federal agencies. 3 = positive, 2 = neutral, 1 = negative. LGBTQ+ have a systematically worse of experience. #lgbtSTEM

@DrKatrin_Rabiei @ManelWatchUS @_WomenSpeakers_ @LoggheMD @JusticeInMed @WomenSurgeons Ideas – multifaceted approach:
1. Need to Increase awareness; call it out each time. Use #manel alerts – i.e. let Twitter friends know of #manels and they can tweet about each one. Allies can work together. @DrSinhaEsq @JulieSilverMD #ILookLikeASurgeon #genderequity #inclusion /1
@DrKatrin_Rabiei @ManelWatchUS @_WomenSpeakers_ @LoggheMD @JusticeInMed @WomenSurgeons @DrSinhaEsq @JulieSilverMD 2. Are there women in Neurosurg groups? Women surgeons group in Sweden? Create @swedish_s manel #genderequity subgroup? #WomenInNeurosurgery #ILookLikeASurgeon
3. First panel okay with one woman (not ideal, but to help make change); clarify must be > 1woman on panels in future /2

This hasn't gotten much attention and I admit I'm disappointed.

There's a lot of talk about #inclusion and #diversity in #science, right along with countless heated discussions of #unconscious #bias permeating all of science. But talk and discussions won't solve the problem>
Taking steps to promote inclusivity & discourage bias will.

Why is it important to talk about this here if this is just a relatively small workshop?

1. To draw attention to what we can DO; talk is cheap.
2. to describe how a workshop like EMCL can contribute significantly to professional growth, making attendance to similar events typically accessible only to a privileged few .

Specifically:

3. Workshops like these are naturally tight-knit. Teams work closely for a week.>

Let’s talk about race and gender bias in hiring. It’s a topic where many well-meaning people have faulty thinking.

1. Your system can be biased, even when you are not.

2. We need to decouple bias from morality. Bias is not a moral failing any more than writing a bug in code is.
3. You ARE biased. We all are. It’s part of being human. This is why scientists have systems for reducing bias in studies.

One more time: nobody is calling you a racist or a sexist. Ok?

Once we removal moral connotations from discussions about bias, we can think scientifically.
4. A fair hiring process does not require any group to receive special treatment.

But, and this is what trips people up:

5. It’s impossible to DESIGN a fair process without talking about underrepresented groups.

Why? To reduce bias, you have to identify and think hard about it

A little thread telling you one of my motivations for this #CitizenScience collaboration between @AutisticaUK and @turinginst.

In 2016 I was selected to attend #OpenCon @open_con - a conference to support #EarlyCareer researchers in #OpenData #OpenAccess and #OpenEducationalResources.

We were asked to watch a couple of videos before arriving in #DC to make sure we were all on the same page.
The video/webinar that stuck with me the most was the one on #Diversity, #Equity and #Inclusion in the #Open community.

And in particular the section by @pennyb which starts around 15:30

So I wanted to close tonight by talking a bit about how I got involved in #diversity #equity #inclusion efforts in #STEM and otherwise, and some general considerations for getting involved, especially as a white, hetero, cisgender individual.
If you had told me 20 years ago that I would be involved, I'm not sure I would have believed you. I was a pretty ignorant and inherently biased individual bc of where and how I grew up. But luckily people can grow. A couple things happened that changed my path.
Gainesville and UF were a huge part of it. I've lived in other colleges and cities, but it's been different here. Even with all their problems, the town & university have more diversity than anywhere I'd been & people were openly discussing big important related issues together.

What I learnt across 3 days attending sessions on accessibility and disability at the Internet Governance Forum: intgovforum.org/multilingual/

(thread)
- accessibility for disabled users is a long way down the list of priorities
- accessibility for those of us with invisible/cognitive differences is even further down that list
- accessibility is something of a dirty word for both designers and clients. It's seen as an imposition, compromising "good" design and stifling creativity and creative freedom.
- very few people recognise what an accessible web site or app actually looks like
