04/28: I spoke to the @cityofwinnipeg supporting the SPIRIT of the "Corporate Advertising Policy.”

A randy night at the senior's centre has more teeth than this #policy.

It took #Winnipeg months to put "We prefer #kindness" in print.

This is long. A 🧵 …
(Actually, 3 🧵’s)
Watch -

Our elected officials are tone deaf to harm corporate #Winnipeg enables. Context is key to understanding and interrupting my presentation proved that.

Including #wpg22 for candidates. Please address this in your campaign.

#wpgpoli #mbpoli 02/1🧵
@ShawnNason moved, @KevinKleinwpg seconded.

I didn't get to finish my presentation. I’ll share my notes here.

(Could have finished in ~9 mins, in full, with all relevant context 🤷🏼‍♀️)

3/15 ImageImageImageImage

🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ Simple adjustments, such as including your pronouns in your email signature, can go a long way toward creating a more open and inclusive workplace. Find out more: #Inclusion
Thanks for everyone’s comments, we can see there are some very strong opinions on this issue. The purpose behind our tweet was to relay that using pronouns can help to include under-represented groups at work that greatly appreciate the use of pronouns.
It is up to individuals at work on whether they feel comfortable in using pronouns and it is optional. As impartial workplace experts, we regularly feature guest blogs / opinions on a range of equality and diversity issues.

As a member of @ScienceAU, Victoria's Science Society supports the #research sector's ten pledges, seeking commitments from candidates for the Australian Federal #Election2022. Let's run through them all, shall we? #auspol #ausvotes #AusVotes2022
Let's punch *at* our weight in #research funding, at least. It's a matter of investing in our brainpower as a resource for other sectors to draw on, & sustain tertiary #education as one of major exports. #auspol #ausvotes #AusVotes2022
We argue #research #translation is about "bench to #community" - #industry is a big part of that. Public funding established a world class research sector, but the private sector is where we need to build capacity to benefit from that resource. #auspol #ausvotes #AusVotes2022

These are our 5 takeaways from the #IPCC report on #mitigation, looking at what it means for the #waste sector. Spoiler: we need to cut emissions as fast and furious as we can, and reducing #waste, #plastic and being more materials efficient can help lots…
As the report points out, the #waste sector remains the largest contributor to urban emissions after the energy sector, even in low-carbon #cities. Urban areas themselves represent the lion’s share of global emissions, and it's increasing: from 60% in 2000 to 67% in 2015.
So, the @IPCC_CH #ClimateReport recognises that cities can significantly reduce emissions, but this requires systemic transformation: #circulareconomy, #inclusion, #equity, innovative technologies can make a huge contribution towards low carbon urban devel'mnt

THREAD Thank you to @ewansomerville & @Telegraph for this excellent article exposing @WelshGovernment’s misuse of £1,137,584 of public money on this poorly designed survey. When dealing with children a #safeguarding first approach must be used. They didn’t…
There were so many things wrong with this survey the article was unable to cover them all. They ranged from the merely incompetent/ridiculous to damaging & triggering for vulnerable children. This box ticking approach to #safeguarding & #inclusion is simply unacceptable. #WomenEd
Primary school children are asked how they identify but not for their biological sex. This renders the data worthless, is evidence of the extent of ideological capture & is dangerous & confusing for young children @SHRNWales @DECIPHerCentre @cardiffuni #edutwitter #WalesWomen

@McKinsey Research Recap: 4 Ways to Build a More Inclusive Workplace

#Inclusion is the degree to which an individual feels that their authentic selves are welcomed at work, enabling them to contribute in a meaningful and deliberate manner.…
@McKinsey “39% of all respondents say they have turned down or decided not to pursue a job because of a perceived lack of inclusion at an organization”
@McKinsey & Company

This should matter to leaders everywhere. If people feel there’s a lack of inclusion, they’ll bypass your company
@McKinsey How do leaders ensure that doesn’t happen?

Answer: Focus on making your workplace culture more diverse and make it a priority now (versus somewhere in the distant future). When you create a more inclusive and diverse environment, your company will notice positive outcomes.

We are exploring the distinction between #unity and #uniformity...
The distinction between seems to be in each word's relationship with #tolerance and #acceptance.
#Uniformity is about being alike, with less room for our #differences. We can see that it has relevance in some places, such as setting up structures for organising things.

#BlackHistoryMonth is an opportunity to understand Black histories, going beyond stories of racism and slavery to spotlight Black success and high achievement. However, the focus on the past sometimes causes us to overlook the history that Black people make right now today.
There are times that Black History walks among us and we fail to recognize its greatness. My grandmomma used to say, “Flowers are for the living.” That is to say, can’t no dead people smell no flowers! Why do we wait for people to die before we honor them?
Let’s honor them now! While they can appreciate it! And they can know that we appreciate them! And sometimes, Black History is as simple as representation.

:: Appearance, Perception and Reaction ::

I've waited a bit for things to die down,
but I think it's time for a little chat about diversity, inclusivity and doing the right thing the right way.

(Yes, coming from a 40yo straight white male!)

#Diversity #inclusion
Now, recently, there was an event promoted ...
... and it was hit with the:
"surprise, white guys"

The problem is - it wasn't just white guys.
The problem is also - they didn't make that clear.

If you are going to do the right thing,
Do It Right!

That means you need to push and clearly display and reference minorities and those often under-represented - in all media and promotions.

Front AND Center

What is the point of being inclusive,
and then only displaying the prominent/common demographic?

Emotions are caught, not taught.

People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.

You cannot help those who do not want to help themselves.

People buy w/emotions & justify w/logic

👆🏼combine those & more
You can show people data, graphs & stats till you’re blue in the face...but it’s their emotion/trust they were sold on prior to ever cracking open that graph.

After >2 years of research on #humanitarian #inclusion at @hpg_odi, we’re finally starting to pull everything together. We’re not quite there yet, but about ready to share some of our workings-out… 1/17 (yes, yes I know, buckle up etc.)
First, what are we talking about here? As @VeroBarbelet and Caitlin Wake lay out here, #inclusion can be broken down into:
1️⃣ Equitable access,
2️⃣ Specific and diverse needs,
3️⃣ Participation
4️⃣ Impartiality 2/17…
So, aid is inclusive when access barriers removed, when it’s sensitive to different needs, when (different) people have a chance to shape how it’s delivered, and reaches the most urgent cases. Basically, inclusion is 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 3/17

Towards inclusive education
A necessary transformation
Australian government report

Yet another plan lost to the exploitation of greedy lobbiests?

Nobody is "eligible or ineligible" for inclusion
All diversity is welcomed…
What other protected trait owned & defined by those who *don't* have that trait?
Imagine gay men had to get a "certificate of gayness" from a straight man, for "accommodation" in an uninclusive environment?
A woman get a certificate of womanhood to be "accommodated" from a man?
Australia claims to be all about inclusion and fairness these days?
So why is including diversity so hard?
Why are there whole industries that profit from defining us in deficit terms?
And saying we are unreliable?
Why do we need certificatation from people who *aren't us*?
