In dealing with oppressors, we often hear that Allah told Prophet Musa: "Tell him a gentle word," as an excuse for cozying up. This is a misuse of evidence because it didn't stop there. It escalated to an outright confrontation giving Pharaoh great discomfort.
If there's any lesson in Ashura, it's that oppressors should be given grief. Sayyidna al-Husayn didn't let Yazid off the hook easily. By forcing Yazid's hand, and having his generals end up killing him, their whole regime was cursed, and it ended a year or so later.
Oppressors and deviants love spiritual Muslims, like Sufis, because they know they'll get off easy. The Sufi won't give you a hard time. If that's the case, it's a big mistake. To give an oppressor comfort is to allow more harm. The lions of tasawwuf were never like this.

Newsflash. Rashad Khalifa's successor and leader of the Sunna Rejectors of America, Edip Yuksel, has challenged our own Jake Brancatella to a public debate. Apparently, Mr. Yusel got triggered by this week's episode.
If it was me, I would have reservations about debating him, because he is an older man, and in our religion it is makruh (discouraged) to humiliate the elderly. This would not be a debate; it would be a one-sided blood-bath, and frankly, I would worry about his health.
Jake, hwvr, knows Mr Yuksel, and would be happy to debate him in a livestream. My only advice: don't go too hard, because if Safina Society sponsors it, we don't have debaters insurance, and I don't want the opponent's blood pressure to rise and cause an unfortunate health event.

The way most Muslims live (as well as conservative Chrstns and Jews), men ask for a woman's hand in marriage from the dad. The dad is not a turn-style who has to say yes. He is a "wali" or protector of his daughter's rights. THREAD
Being a wali is not an honorary role. You're not just throwing out the first pitch. You're actually trying to throw curve balls to see whether this guy checks out or has issues. Here are some questions and demands a wali should make:
-Background check. Call and meet at least four people that were close to this man and interview them. There's no husn al-zann (good opinion) in marriage. As a potential suitor, you are rejected until you prove yourself, much like an application for employment.

It's reports like this that make it very hard for me to accept the rhetoric that maleness is uniquely under attack & needs defending, at least in the broad scheme of things.
Among western conservatives, there's a common talking point that society is targeting men & trying to emasculate them, that men are somehow uniquely vulnerable & must be defended.
Certainly, we're seeing a kind of pushback against men in western culture, but in the grand scheme of history & global culture, it's a blip on the radar. (And quite frankly, I don't think it will accomplish what it promises in the long run b/c of basic human physiology.)

I represented the Irish party at the European Federation of GPs and edited what we laughingly called its theoretical journal.
I also spent a year in the French party and, more interestingly, on the far left of the German party. I thought the Irish party had the potential to become a party of and for #SocialMovements. I found I was wrong, and left.

We have all seen people act the fool at airports, cinemas, in traffic, at hospitals etc. We have all heard them say that nonsensical, infantile, conceited irrational phrase "do you know who I am" when they are being corrected for doing the wrong things.
We have seen people who get up during a flight to open the overhead lockers while the seatbelt signs were on attack air hostesses for telling them to respect themselves and abide by the rules and regulations.
We have seen fellow Nigerians at the toll gate drive all the way to the end with no respect for queues and order, and expect to be treated as kings. We have seen them talk down to security at malls whose job is to check everyone coming in irrespective of who they are.
