Offshore wind has "near limitless" potential & is "set to be competitive with fossil fuels within the next decade", as costs fall 60% by 2040.

Turbines will soon be as large as the Eiffel Tower.

Pretty amazing stuff from today's new @IEA report.

There is technical potential for offshore wind to meet Europe's entire electricity demand more than 10 times over, the IEA says, and 9x in Japan.

Even India (could) get all its electricity from offshore wind!

Before we get too excited, though, it's worth noting offshore wind is starting from a very low base.

So even ≥15x increase means it'd still only meet 3-5% of global electricity demand by 2040.

One of most striking statements in IEA report is on offshore wind having "system value comparable to baseload technologies".

Here's the money chart:

(It's complex but basically says offshore wind'll become more valuable to EU/CN grids than coal or gas)

Let's look more closely at that chart showing the incredibly high value of offshore wind.

"WACC" is the cost of financing new capacity & in Europe –thanks to govt contracts– big offshore wind firms are already at around 4%, meaning lower costs to build.

We recently wrote about record-low prices for offshore wind in the UK, which could be cheaper than running *existing* gas plants by 2023

Those very low UK offshore wind prices are included in IEA analysis (but NB it's in $ not £, so higher numbers).

Basically, whichever way you look at it, offshore wind is becoming *really* competitive + has high "system value".

Very little not to like.

The IEA report also suggests a future role for offshore wind in producing zero-carbon hydrogen for use in other sectors – transport, industry, heating.

(Worth saying the costs it's talking about are relatively high, see link from earlier this week )
Floating offshore wind also has big potential, even though currently higher cost
