I have something to announce.

I'm not sure many of you know, but I am a self-published novelist, and after 7 years of on-again off-again work, my biggest writing project, the Paradocian Trilogy, will soon be drawing to a close with the release of the third and final installment.
The Paradocian Trilogy tells the saga of U.S. Senator Greg Crawley (D-IN) as he joins a secret society of time-traveling assassins whose sworn mission is to create time paradoxes — and rapidly finds himself in the middle of an ideological war for the future of the multiverse.
The first two installments are already available on Kindle.

The Boomer generation spent their lives voting for politicians who told them cut taxes, cut taxes, cut taxes, and the rich will increase supply until everything's cheaper. You can have your cake and eat it too.

They're now learning, too late, that that doesn't work on housing.
It's a small comfort to my generation that conservative Boomers are only now realizing that the same policies they voted for that kept us in their basements are going to keep them from retiring.
Oh, and since every single time I point this out I get accused of generational bigotry: of course not all Boomers vote the same and plenty of them voted for responsible government. But the generation as a whole, did not. Come at me.

Yep. Corporations buying off legislatures was the biggest reason we needed the 17th Amendment, but there are other reasons too.

For one, if a legislature had split party control, it would often deadlock on who to appoint and states could go years without Senate representation.
Another problem with the pre-17th Amendment Senate appointment system: as the power of the federal govt grew over the 19th century, Senate appointments started to be the only issue dominating legislative elections, nationalizing these races and sidelining debate of local issues.
Today, 17A repealers argue if we went back to the old way, states would take control of the national debt.

Even the conservative Heritage Foundation has debunked this idea, pointing out that state pols have HUGE incentive to increase federal spending. heritage.org/the-constituti…

If laypeople understood what private-equity owned firms do, this would make them want to vote for Warren even more.
The PE industry isn't inherently bad — it finances some small businesses that can't get capital elsewhere — but in the US, due to lax laws, most PE firms now make money by buying healthy companies, shifting their own debt into them, plundering their assets and firing the workers.
A good case is Toys R Us.

Many people assume Toys R Us went bust because they were unprofitable. But that's not true — they were actually turning a profit. They went bust because a PE firm bought them, then forced Toys R Us itself to pay the debt the PE firm ran up buying them.

A few years ago, I read an article about Celtic Park being the greatest traceable home advantage in sport. The piece cited Celtic's European Record of the time and spoke to player after player from visiting teams who all said that there was that "something" present
in the stadium. Celtic players were also quoted with Henrik Larsson in particular saying that the same something made you run faster and longer, made you try harder, jump higher and think quicker.
Many football stadia have great atmospheres, but this article suggested more than
just atmosphere. It hinted at something else.
I have said for years that there are certain nights when you can feel what the article was on about it. It is a strange sensation. It is neither blind optimism or wishful thinking before a match, and it is not present at every match.

We talked last month about how it's impolite to tag authors directly in negative reviews. It was a whole thing. It went on for a while. But part of why it's impolite is not "it might hurt someone's feelings." It's because the social contract says authors can't respond.
Why can't we respond? Because if we're remotely successful at our jobs, our virtual "weight" is probably substantially greater than the reviewers. And targeting someone for the crime of not liking one of my books is unfair and unkind.
