I don't want to discount the hard work that went into the raid on al Baghdadi last night. It's an accomplishment.

Thank you to the special operators, the analysts, the allies who made it possible and are working hard to reduce the terrorist threat to Americans.
I'd like everyone to recall that the targeting of terrorist leaders is not unique to this Administration.

President Obama also made it a priority, as you can see:

President Obama and CIA Director Panetta briefed senior Congressional leaders on the Bin Laden raid, including @RepMikeRogers, even though they were of the other party.
It also shows the hindsight bias in assuming that the raid would go down like Bin Laden’s and not like Operation Eagle Claw.

I cannot tell you how despicable it is for GOP members to be questioning the loyalty of an American who has risked his life in service to our nation, based on where he was born.

This kind of nativism is gross and beneath you.
Furthermore, I find it amazing the GOP would denigrate this witness as "simpatico with Ukraine" when on a BIPARTISAN basis, America has been simpatico with Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

That's why they approved the arms sales and objected to their delay.
It is the President's conduct that is at issue.

He admitted to it. His lawyer admitted to it. His Chief of Staff admitted to it. His envoys have testified to it. It's in the call record.

This witness heard him say it on the call.

I know that I've been criticizing Republicans for security violations recently, and some of you have suggested we should lock them up.

After the chants of "Lock him up" at the ballpark, I feel I should address it.
We need to be able to draw distinctions between what the President is alleged to have done, as different from the security violations of both (a) Matt Gaetz, and (b) Hillary Clinton, and the appropriate punishments in these circumstances.

First, the security violations.
Information security is governed by regulation, not statute. The standards ensure clear guidelines to protect information.

National security professionals take them very seriously and there are punishments for failing to meet them.

A few words on why Gaetz stunt to storm the SCIF to disrupt Laura Cooper's deposition is a VERY serious national security problem.

Note, I worked in that SCIF for HPSCI and handled cybersecurity issues while there.
Aside from disrupting the testimony of a DoD official shedding light on the President's attempts to extort a sham investigation into the child of his most feared political rival by withholding military aid that Congress gave to resist a Russian invasion...
Storming the SCIF without respecting the security protocols that require people to leave their electronic devices *outside* the space, is actually compromising our national security.

2: One of our sources was able to reach the house where Baghdadi was hiding. Al-Baghdadi changed his places of residence every time. He was about to move to a new place in #Jarablus.

Given Trump’s “speech” on #Baghdadi, I really need to do an extended thread about this issue.
The oft-mentioned "orange jumpsuits" in Trump's #Baghdadi's speech refer to the costumes #ISIS forced their victims to wear.

Guess why.

Those are the same uniforms worn by detainees at Guantanamo and other venues of indefinite detention in the War on Terror.

Intentional.
One reason why British and American hostages (use their NAMES: Jim, Steven, David, Alan, Abdurrahman [Peter]) were grouped according to nationalities was a specific "fuck you" to key partners in the Global War on Terror, and particularly - black sites, torture, rendition, etc.

I hate to say it, but if reported death of #Baghdadi is true (by suicide blast or Special Ops), it’s hardly the end of ISIS.

ISIS isn’t structured like Al Qaeda; ISIS’ organization was intended to be resilient in the event of decapitation strikes.

Regrouping won’t be as hard.
ISIS learned from Al Qaeda’s missteps - a network structure overly reliant on a singular charismatic figurehead like Bin Laden.

Post-Afghanistan, OBL was marginalized (in hiding); the Iraq war allowed (a new) Al Qaeda to regroup.

Baghdadi’s, sadly, death isn’t a game-changer.

In July, a @UN report warned senior ISIS leaders "are among those who have made their way to the #Idlib area..."

But for someone like Baghdadi sending out messages always comes with a risk...
After the release of the audio in September, BrigGen Len Anderson, deputy commander of JTF-Ares, told VOA:
"The more videos that come out gives us, quite honestly, another opportunity to assess, to see what #ISIS leadership is thinking & maybe gather some intelligence from that"
