Did you know that @HSNatSci publishes essay reviews? These reviews are ~3-4K words in length and creatively engage in #histTSM related books that are thematically related. We've published everything from retrospective looks at classics to emerging new directions 1/
They started in this format with the relaunch of @HSNatSci in 2008 under the guidance of then Book Review co-editors @GordinMichael and Angela Creager. The first two published were Matthew Stanley's "Einstein: Essence or Explanation?" V.38(2008): 153-61 hsns.ucpress.edu/content/38/1/1… 2/
Stanley incl. 2 biographies of Einstein by @WalterIsaacson & Jürgen Neffe, & an edited collection by David Rowe & Robert Schulmann, to think about the "reliance on personality as an explanatory category," esp. with #Einstein #histSTM hsns.ucpress.edu/content/38/1/1… 3/
[By the way, Matt Stanley has just published his OWN book discussing the ways that the Great War shaped #Einstein's life and work: Einstein's War: How Relativity Triumphed Amid the Vicious Nationalism of WWI penguinrandomhouse.com/books/608113/e… #histSTM] 4/
The 2nd review in the @HSNatSci relaunched book review section came from Charles Gillispie on Martin Rudwick's #histSTM "chef d'oeuvre" Bursting the Limits of Time: The Reconstruction of Geohistory in the Age of Revolutions: hsns.ucpress.edu/content/38/1/1… 5/
Then earlier this year Andrew Hogan penned "Expanding Perspectives on Heredity" for @HSNatSci hsns.ucpress.edu/content/49/1/1… reflecting on recent books by S.Müller-Wille & C.Brant: Heredity Explored, T.Porter: Genetics in the Madhouse, & @KimTallBear's Native American DNA #histSTM 6/
That same @HSNatSci issue featured Will Wright on "Geological Semantics and the Naming of the Anthropocene." He included too many books wrestling with the history & present of geochronology to list here, so instead see: hsns.ucpress.edu/content/48/1/1… #histSTM 7/
Even these few essays provide a glimpse of the #histSTM topics we love to talk about in @HSNatSci! Curious about writing an essay review of your own? Contact @GWilliamThomas 8/8
