I don't think that's true. His defense will concentrate on convincing the public (and at least thirty-three GOP senators) that even if the quid pro quo happened it was for a proper purpose, had little or no negative outcomes, had collateral benefits, etc.
Trump's defense will hinge on establishing that even if he committed some malfeasance (which is getting more and more undeniable by the day), it doesn't qualify as an impeachable offence.
House GOP can certainly help with that, if they choose to stop playing games.
