Rectangular 1870 Pashmina shawl of #Kashmir embroidered with minutely detailed schematic map of #Srinagar in woollen thread. The ground is red, with a blue expanse of Dal Lake & the river Jhelum dominating the field. Houses, streets & mosques are also embroidered in #Pashmina 1/3
The tiny inscriptions identifying each building & place of interest are embroidered in English. At either end are smaller sections depicting beauty spots of the Kashmir valley such as the various #Mughal gardens. Couldn't find a pic of the complete shawl. 2/3
The shawl was sent from Kashmir as a gift to Queen Victoria some time in the late 19th century. The shawl belongs to the Royal Collection & is on loan to V&A. Pics of the shawl arranged : top left side, top right side, centre top, centre bottom, lower left side & lower right side

First report: 36 hours after I landed in #Kashmir (fifth day of curfew)
I could manage internet connection from a relatives place who lives very close to airport (the only place where internet works)
No communication. Medicines especially insulin is needed in valley
#Kashmir is under complete shut down. Very rare movement of people. The videos of Normal Kashmir being shows by some journalists are of Raj Bagh and area close to press enclave where some movement and please don't mistook it as the picture of entire Kashmir.
URGENT: An urgent ticket counter is needed outside Srinagar airport , so that patients who need urgent medication or parents who need to go out to meet their children would be able to get tickets and could be airlifted. @HMOIndia @PMOIndia

THREAD: Six years ago, in July 2013, I was in #Kashmir. My stay there for work and travel purposes coincided with the onset of #AmarnathYatra due to which never ending convoy movement & overwhelming troop deployment on various Yatra (religious pilgrimage) routes. (1/n)
The Yatris comported themselves as militant Hindu nationalists, carrying the bhagwa & Indian flags. They aggressively shouted slogans like- Bharat me rehna hai, bam bam bhole kehna hai” (“If you want to live in India, you have to chant Shiva’s name”). (2/n)
They littered the place with garbage heaps, washed clothes and themselves openly. Recently, pictures of open defecation have gone viral on social media. Absolute disregard for cleanliness and the environment was palpable in their behavior. (3/n)

Many prominent people were involved with this Cosmic Movement as we will see. One of them was Tomáš Masaryk (who became the first President of Czechoslovakia) also the Princess of Rohan in Vienna and many others. However this group was actually a spin-off of the OTO.
