1. Feedback

Note: There are many different terms for two types of feedback loops, e.g.
- Positive vs. negative
- Amplifying vs. stabilizing
- Reinforcing vs. balancing

Take a moment to consider how these play out in your theory of change.
2. Emergence

Note: You can't understand a complex system by merely looking at one part.

According to Doyne Farmer, non-linearity is necessary for emergence. I've been trying to look for a piece that explains this simply, let me know if you have one in mind!

Sodium glucose transporters (SGLT) in proximal tubules mediate glucose reabsorption.

How?
Na/K ATPase moves Na out & K into the cell ➡️gradient for Na to flow intracellular

SGLT uses this potential to move glucose against its gradient from the tubular fluid into the cell.

SGLT2 inhibitors block glucose reabsorption
➡️renal glucose excretion
➡️glucose levels⬇️

Because this has nothing to do with insulin, they usually don’t cause hypoglycemia or weight gain.

Actually, because of the osmotic diuresis, they decrease blood pressure & weight.

#Complexity Theory: One of the many non-intuitive implications of this approach is that the more complex a problem, the simpler the solution must be. Unintended consequences & butterfly effects render complicated solutions unworkable within a few steps 1/n
The conventional approach is that India is a complex country that requires complex solutions. Complexity theory implies exactly the opposite. Only simple policies, frameworks and institutions can function in India. Leave complex solutions to Singapore 2/n
Another implication of Complexity theory is the 80:20 rule (or some version of it). A 20% solution will often solve 80% of the problem. In many situations, one should leave it at that as further interventions will have unintended consequences & render the system unworkable 3/n
