Me : Java?
X : No, my friend says he knows you from the Perl community.
Me : Well, it's a wonderful language and an even more amazing community. The future of serverless includes learning a lot of lessons from CPAN.
X : This is all pre cloud.
Me : Ehhh ... yes?
X : I thought you were the "cloud" guy.
Me : Life existed before "cloud", I also retired from "cloud" in 2010 .... well tried to retire, got dragged back but managed to eventually slip into shadows.
X : Apparently you were a big supporter of open source.
Me : Is there a point?
X : Why are you so negative about open source today?
Me : I'm not. There are amazing examples of incredible open source efforts out there ... from ASF to Perl to even some wonderful community work in China. I owe everything to open source, it made me.
X : Openstack? Kubernetes? Docker?
Me : Just because I have open source running through my veins doesn't mean I'm going to agree with every community effort and it certainly doesn't mean I won't challenge when I think something is wrong whether it's a project or license model.
X : After following you all this while, I want to know who X is.
Me : Hmmm ... it's everyone and no-one.

There are so many good comments and advice in the survey. Thank you so much and it will all be listened to and acted upon where possible.

Two things which truly made me beam.
1) "Felt like a community"
2) "definitely felt like less of a cult-of-simon event"
I cannot express how much joy and comfort it brings me to know that should I get hit by a bus tomorrow that mapping will continue.

Eventually, my form of maps will be replaced with better maps - the delightful fate of all models that expose a new space.
The joy is not that the model is right (it's not) but that a door has been opened and others are walking through.

That's the magic. Shining a light so others can find something more beautiful.

I think I'm feeling a sense of being content. That's a new one for me.

Me : My nature is I tend to accentuate flaws. Though I see far more flaws with Freeman's analysis of Mead. I'm also a geneticist by training which means ...
... on the whole nature vs nurture style of debate then I'm both with a heavy dose of cross generational inheritance of environmental factors. I often find the debate to be too reductionist e.g. selfish genes etc.
You have to remember that when I grew up in genetics there was a sudden explosion in gene sequencing machines and obviously that meant a lot of promotion of the idea that it was all about the "sequence" ... that's just one part of the story.

You always judge the performance of an executive by what they start in the first 100 days ... so what exactly has been done? A rehashed deal with no agreement, a delay and a bunch of future promises .... not exactly overwhelming. Both Cameron and May did more ->
Though I fundamentally disagree with the political aspects of austerity that was driven under @David_Cameron (but not with necessity to reduce waste) ... I am impressed by the energy, drive and motivation to create change that he brought. Boris is a pale imitation.
I have a strong bias towards @jeremycorbyn being that I'm old Labour - blog.gardeviance.org/2015/05/i-am-o… ... and I was not happy about political dogma of austerity. But I thought @David_Cameron resignation was a terrible loss. It's a pity.

Boris is no fool but he is no leader either.

The future of #serverless is not stateful compute. It's computeful state.
Instead of trying to shoehorn statefulness into our current stateless compute models, we should be thinking about how to bring our code closer to our data. Lambda with EBS attached is bad. Paradigms more like handing code directly to S3 to run on all your objects.
People saying “this is just stored procedures” are like the people saying “Lambda is just cgi-bin”. Sure, superficially they’ve got the same model, but the details result in very different characteristics.

This site was supposed to be the answer, but it only raises even more questions. The information here is mostly marketing-related, and has pointers to other online locations, outside go.java.

Potential: very high.
Reality: waste of TLD.

The Java source, no doubt. Yet, devs who want to just learn/code Java apps will only find binaries downloads. Nothing else serves the average Java software developer. "Developer's Guide" is for contributors.

#serverless advocates - we are doing something wrong. I have been putting this off for a long time but I really think it is important and has to be said. Warning: LONG thread.
The trigger for this thread was a talk I gave at #DevOpsDays Edinburgh. It wasn't the talk per-say, but the whole conference experience (which was awesome, but that's a topic for another thread).
Here I am, with around 200 people who really care about the DevOps culture and practices - and so little of them has any experience with serverless tech.
