It's a big day in Smithsonian history! Today we officially install Lonnie G. Bunch III (@SmithsonianSec) as our #14thSecretary in the beautiful Arts and Industries Building. Today's ceremony includes the Smithsonian Badge of Office, an 18-carat gold medallion symbolizing peace and goodwill. The Owl of Athena stands next to the words from James Smithson’s will that sparked the Smithsonian: “For the Increase and Diffusion of Knowledge Among Men.” Circular metallic badge with a large image of an owl engraved into it. Today is the hottest day in the history of France.

Officially, Carpentras France has set a new national temperature record: 44.3°C (111.7°F)

The old record (44.1°C) was set in August 2003, during the height of one of the deadliest heat waves in history.

I used to live in Tucson, Arizona. 112°F is also the hottest temperature I ever experienced there. It felt like the insides of my eyes were burning.

This is June. In France.

Quite simply, this shouldn't be happening. We are in a climate emergency.
Another new official record in France: 44.4°C/111.9°F

Courbessac, Nîmes, France just moments ago.

This is normal weather for Arizona or Death Valley or Libya. This is not normal for France.

Big day on the history front. We'll start in 1789, when President Washington signed the Judiciary Act—creating the Federal Court system. Article III of the Constitution established a Supreme Court, but the authority to create lower federal courts was left to Congress /1
