The Owl of Athena stands next to the words from James Smithson’s will that sparked the Smithsonian: “For the Increase and Diffusion of Knowledge Among Men.” Circular metallic badge with a large image of an owl engraved into it. Text reads: “For the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men.”
🗝️Since the 1960s, the Secretary has been given a ceremonial key—one of the original keys to the Smithsonian Institution Building—as a symbol of knowledge and guardianship. Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., Chancellor of the Smithsonian, presents the key to @SmithsonianSec. “We will be the place Americans look to understand themselves, their history, and their world. We must be the glue that helps to hold the country together.” — @SmithsonianSec Lonnie G. Bunch III on the future of the Smithsonian. Stage under three large windows. A man is speaking at a podium.
