Let me agree partly kuti the song is not really enjoyable, which is fine. Man hasn't necessarily been putting out the greatest material lately. However, I think people missed the point of the video - which is unfortunately poorly executed bt let me explain
The theme is set with a smartly dressed Enzo Ishall on a backdrop of a dark grungy setting, fire, giant skeletons and some grizzly creatures that represent demons. Basically he is walking through the valley of the shadow of death - or his version of it at least Image
He's wearing a belt with a golden animal head. Hard to say what the animal is or the relevance bt my assumption is closest would be Lion of Judah especially considering the importance of it in dancehall culture of which Enzo Ishall is a part of. Don't quote me on that though 😂🤷🏾‍♂️ Image
The Walking Dead-esque setting sees him dodge burning human skeletons and dragon fire. The scene switches to him lying in bed with a beautiful lady by his side and this at first makes it seem like just a dream, until one of the demonic creatures is seen by the bedside. ImageImage
Enzo wakes up and he has torture marks all over his back - a representation of the struggle he went through and ultimately overcame. Battle scars but the key point being that he was victorious. He then goes to a tailor to get suited up. Same suit in his dream Image
He then walks into a room full of his elders and mentors: Jah Seed, Prophet Passion Java, DJ Fantan et al and starts narrating to them his experiences that led him to eating at the same table with them. Ultimately the song and video are about victory against all odds. ImageImage
The disconnect between the video and the people is firstly that the scenes are relatively disjointed. Tge story doesn't flow. Some close-medium shots were misplaced eg the table shot, would have worked better as a wide shot to give the bigger picture perspective to help the story
The whole 'demons' vibe threw people off - you know Africans. It goes with the story but the song being Enzo's take on Jamaican patois lost the audience. Most are used to his compelling Shona delivery which is his most comfortable lane.
To be able to narrate his story on this song maybe he needed to consider the audience and what made them listen to him: his witty wordplay and ghetto life commentary in Shona. I suspect this song has immense meaning to Enzo but it didn't affect the audience the same way.
Seems some of the frame rates were wrong for the slow mo up close shots which were occasionally choppy. The green screen and superimposition editing work was not of standard. Overall the execution of the video could have been better and that would have lessened the backlash
The song lyrics were hard for me to quite catch and understand but like I said the song isn't much to write home about. All in all, it seems that Highest Score became a melting pot of judgement: "demonic" references and imagery, poor storyline execution and overexpectant audience
