Me doing routine thing with Japanese financial institution over the phone, 5 minutes in:

Operator: "Wait wait wait you sound like the kind of person who is probably computer savvy."
Me: "*polite nothings*
Operator: "In that case, you could do this on a website."
Me: "On a website?"
Operator: "On a website!"
Me: "ON A WEBSITE!"

Operator then directs me to the correct portion of the website.

Me: "I only see paper forms to fill out manually and send in."
Operator: "On a website!"
Me: "... OK."
Frustrations over the technical competence of Japanese financial institutions aside I very much appreciate that the operator said "So do you see the label marked 小規模企業共済等掛金払込証明書再発行申請書?" without assuming that I would not be able to read that label.

Investment is a bet on what the future will look like and a vote on what the future should look like. These two observations are sometime in tension.
An interesting related observation, which I think I’m stealing from @patrickc, is that both the bets and the votes get distributed along things adjacent to the intellectual interests of whomever did really well in the last iteration of the game.
I think that people probably agree with that in the abstract but (and this is a recurring theme for me) don’t do the strategy implied by it, which is to make bets on who will do well in N+1 and get upstream of their intellectual interests starting immediately.

One reason I love finance is it gives you reasons to look into the fascinating underbellies of the global economy to answer weird questions.

Here's one: why would someone outside of Japan ever want to loan the Japanese government money at ~0% interest?

The answer:

They're only loaning the Japanese government money (via buying JGBs) as a side effect of the transaction that they *really* want to do, which is selling dollars [0] to Japanese financial institutions, which is lucrative.

[0] Technically, dollar-denominated exposure.

I’d say the same and I’ve been to something like 15 of them.

I think people scandalously underweight peer groups as a source of life happiness and therefore underweight being intentional w/r/t who one annoints as one’s peers.
And this with the Internet! Unshackled from the tyranny of physical location you can now pick a tribe anywhere in the world, and yet so many of us sort of sleepwalk our way into the tribe defined by our high school cafeteria’s seating choices.
I also think we have insufficient cultural scripts for this question, because most scripts for the ancestral environment rhyme with “You can’t choose your children’s’ friends but you can choose what pool they pick from” and “Be judicious about romantic partners; friends find you”

My therapist said something really incredible to me recently about the "fawning" trauma response and how it shows up for me, and I want to share that insight, because it sort of blew my mind.

If you're not sure what I mean by "fawning," I have an entire post about it if you'd like to learn more! In short, it's a response to trauma, not unlike fight, flight, and freeze. It's essentially "people-pleasing" as a coping mechanism.

The other day when I was crossing the street, someone deliberately tried to run me over because I was in drag (I perform as a drag queen sometimes!). I'm totally fine, but obviously I brought it up in therapy, because I wanted to unpack how I reacted to it.

A small story:

Picture Consort and I on the couch. Rachel Maddow explains something as Consort does a crossword puzzle on his phone and I look at Carbon38 and pretend I'm the kind of person who pays over a hundred dollars for workout pants. A cat sleeps nearby.

There is peace.
Rachel throws it to Lawrence and I stand to contemplate dinner. Halfway through standing up, I freeze, one foot hovering in the air. A small sound - not unlike a scream from a great distance - dribbles from my lips. Consort does not look up.

"Go get a m-"

"No."
Between the ages of 15 and 29, I was in five car accidents where the car was totaled. Twice, I had to be cut out of the car. If you are thinking, "Quinn, you are a terrible driver," yes, but only one was my fault. Three times, I was a passenger.

Hunting Child Trafficking Nests:
A few research tips when hunting down child trafficking Nests. I’m sure there are actual trackers on the ground that use other means of recon/research methods, but this is computer-based research.
2) I refer to them as “Nests” because they are well designed communities (for lack of a better term), that work together to achieve their goals. I have found patterns along the way that are “red flags” and may help you with your digging.
3) The “Nests” I am referring to are the ones that have a system in place, and are likely using the children for more than pedophilia acts, such as for testing, possibly mind control, possibly DNA related, and God knows what else.
