(2) Clearly not everyone reading the rest of the paper would be even as aware of the ethical issues as that statement is
(3) They are on record saying that using the system as a "checker" isn't problematic

Niven & Kao's upcoming #acl2019nlp paper "Probing Neural Network Comprehension of Natural Language Arguments" asks exactly the right question of unreasonable performance: "what has BERT learned about argument comprehension?"

They show, with careful experiments, that in fact, “BERT has learned nothing about argument comprehension.” Rather: “As our learners get stronger, controlling for spurious statistics becomes more important in order to have confidence in their apparent performance.” /2
This kind of careful work, featuring careful attention to the data, is exactly what #NLProc needs more of! /3

I've seen several different #NLProc folks suggesting today that it would fun/interesting/worthwhile to use BERT or GPT-2 to fill in the redacted bits of the Mueller report. A short thread on why this is a terrible idea /1
First: consider the importance of the ability to find news sources that you trust and how much interest there is in the document. If you put out a version of that document with invented text in place of the redactions, how long before someone reposts it as the real thing? /2
How does that affect the discourse around what's actually contained in the (unredacted) version of the document, what it means, etc. both immediately and at some future point when the actual thing is available in full? How does it affect people's trust in reliable news? /3

For the curious, here are the results of my #unscientificpoll about questions in double modals, plus some reflections:
So, "Might Pat could leave?" was slightly more popular than "Might could Pat leave?" but the majority answer by far was neither of those. >>
I suspect that's because many people who answered the poll just wanted to see the results, and 'neither' seemed like the best answer in that case. >>

2/Its problematic that our media is dominated by white males who work in groupthink (Look at #TheMuellerReport's groupthink 'conclusion' coverage). It's especially problematic when it comes to covering white male candidates vs female candidates, female & male candidates of color.
3/Thankfully we have news programs like @JoyAnnReid that are incredibly inclusive. I'd like to see more news programs follow her model, but even w/ that we still need MORE diverse voices on TV that we haven't really seen yet. We need more statistics based coverage less punditry.

hi! digitization/IR librarian/archivist types! how have you dealt with arbitrary take down "request" (more like order) that go against best practice from uni admin? as in something like "all existence must be erased from the IR because we say so" & the reason is... not copyright.
i am keeping this extremely vague in public b/c i don't want to be identified publicly for raising a fuss b/c i don't want to be out of a job but this is really messing with me because the decision is... it's not even a best practice thing, it's... morally and ethically wrong.
this is really messing with me. i'm not the only one here mad/upset but we have no recourse here or room to protest, it's coming directly from the uni's president.

My #BlackHistoryMonth story:

In February of my senior year of high school, there was a Black History Month presentation scheduled. But attendance was optional.

The optional attendance policy upset the black students in the school. They staged a walkout during the lunch periods.
My 4th period class -- lunch periods shared the same time slots as 4th period classes -- was all white students, so we sat in our room during the walkout, which I think we could see from our window. None of us kids really understood why the walkout was occurring.
After all, it was a Black History Month presentation, so why should everyone have to attend it, instead of just students who were interested in Black History (whatever that meant), of whatever race? The attitude in the room was one of mainly confusion.
