It’s happening. Today @AOC and @BernieSanders are launching the Green New Deal for Public Housing Act. It’s good.

I’m thrilled to be quoted in this piece trying to grapple w how great green investment in public housing could be in US: “Who knows what Americans will contribute by really taking public housing seriously, by investing in it seriously, and by making it green and healthy and safe”
Also thank you @AlexCKaufman for going deep on how successful NYCHA’s last foray into green industrial policy was. Public housing has led on green innovation before, and it could do even more in the decade ahead

What would a Green New Deal for NYCHA look like?
Sorely needed maintenance, energy retrofits, climate proofing, and good quality jobs for residents, for starters.

@DianaBudds And thanks for including my history take. I've been thinking a lot lately about the public housing road not taken in the New Deal. NYC had already developed beautiful non-market housing forms, and housing advocates like Gail Radford were touring Red Vienna and German cities

Obviously we'll have to get more details as this rolls out (sorry). In A Planet to Win, our inspiration was Helsinki's Kutsuplus program, which was killed by austerity but actually showed a powerful alternative to both Lyft/Uber and private cars

To have cheap, abundant, no-carbon energy, we need massive, federal green investment. We need a Green New Deal

That's my big takeaway from this fantastic episode featuring @russellgold. But there are three more key points I want to draw out

My favorite things about the Green New Deal for Housing Act are 1) On-site renewable energy sources 2) Public housing residents get priority in maintenance jobs 3) On-site grocery stores, gardens, and childcare!
