“You awake in the middle of the night to the sound of someone rummaging through your personal belongings.” No. That is the sound of Todd Baxter. Sheriff of Monroe County, NY. Stoking fear & calling for repeal of commonsense bail reforms before they even begin. This is pathetic.
“The public will be shocked at the negative impact this law will have on safety of our communities.” Despite clear evidence from other states that NY bail reform reduces crime & saves money, all while keeping families together, Monroe County Sheriff wants to undermine change.
One of the arguments against bail reform Baxter uses is bizarre. “Your son is arrested for drug possession. Your son receives no help & continues in his addiction.” His claim seems to be w/o the ability to jail people w/ addictions on bail they can’t afford, they’ll never heal.
Monroe County Sheriff fearmongering about bail reform is yet another example of what the @nytimes Editorial Board calls “A last sad gasp against criminal justice reform.”
