It's possible I skimmed a sentence somewhere in the middle that I shouldn't have, but everything described in this piece on high school "cancel culture" seems benign, even healthy, to me.
(Not to say that there's no ugly stuff happening in high schools these days. There's always ugly stuff happening. But the stuff described in this article strikes me as entirely reasonable and proportionate limit-setting.)
In my experience, people experiencing disproportionately minor consequences for acting like assholes is a much bigger problem than the reverse, and if the language of "cancelling" is one that helps people hold each other accountable, that's a positive development.
Also, and I know I've said this before: Nobody is ever under an obligation to be friends with you. There's no such thing as reasonable or unreasonable grounds to terminate a friendship, particularly a casual one.
