Julie's right (about a lot of things). I'm not a talented writer. I'm a hard-working writer, but if I have a knack it's seeing connections and patterns between seemingly disparate things.

You can train your mind to do that, to look past the obvious form and see the connections.
The tribalism in our culture lulls us into always seeing differences. Recognize differences, but looks deeper for commonalities. Stories work the same way. Creativity works the same way.

How are two different things similar? Answering that can lead to real breakthroughs.

ON WRITING: This week, I'm turning in a first draft of a screenplay assignment, something on the bigger scale of genre, so I thought I would thread a bit on how to make this kind of thing less intimidating, whether it's an assignment or your own spec. Might be helpful to you...
It can be daunting, these bigger things, but remember that even the biggest genre story is usually made of two-three character scenes. That's the BULK of it. You never really write the cast of thousands for most of it. Focus on that. Not the scope. Two-three character scenes.
Those scenes may happen in fantastic places, but don't worry too much about describing the mis en scene with all the detail. Just put enough to set the stage for the scene and keep as much white on the page as you can. You're writing. Not directing. Not doing production design.

I got a couple of DM's asking me about character development and writing. I have a little time this fine morning. I'll put together a small #writing thread.

So, character development. It's just my approach. YMMV, but here's my path...
Character isn't built in backstory or aesthetic details. Backstory is there to help the writer, but the character development comes form CHOICES and CONSEQUENCES. The more a character makes CHOICES, the more the audience/reader will learn about them.
We understand someone's nature by how the react to things. We assess them based on the choices they make, and those choices, ideally, shouldn't be easy.

Gonna start the New Year with some advi-- no, PERSPECTIVE on getting started in comics because I get a lot of DM's asking me about this. Small thread. Mainly for writers, I suppose, because that's what I know.
Let me start by being clear that I'm on the OUTER RIM of comics. I work consistently and I'm grateful to have so many readers, but if there's a star where the cool kids gather in comics, I'm on the planet that it's farthest from, hahaha. So YMMV with my perspective.
As a writer, I write a lot of forms. Screenplays. Teleplays. Stage Plays. Prose AND Comics. That helped me keep from feeling stagnant in any one element, and spread around the potential frustration of adversity. So 1. Consider writing other things too. For your sanity's sake.

Just woke up to a very big MMT twitterstorm inspired by some of @matthewstoller's tweets (currently visiting family in Oz). A few responses:

1. I find it honestly bizarre that someone would try to separate my institutional/monetary analysis from MMT, given that I learned what I
know through MMT and consider my work a direct extension of it (even as I don’t mean to presume other MMTers will agree with all of my views).

2. For example, I wrote my major writing credit paper in law school on the legalities of the platinum coin, which was inspired by the
MMT-informed legal analysis of Carlos Mucha, who first wrote about the coin on Warren Mosler’s blog. I remember at the time discussing the nitty gritty of legal and operational budgeting details with many MMTers, without whom I wouldn’t have come to the conclusions I did.

The Legendary Bob Marley posits that you don’t have to smoke herbs to be a Rasta but it sure helps isolate you from the noise, distractions, life troubles etc. It numbs you enough to connect with your deeper essence. It is however noteworthy that some can connect naturally.
Critical Thinking is a function of balance between the biochemical events in the brain. While some will be ruined by external influence with chemicals that help stimulate the brain, others need it to function. Da Vinci was mostly high while connecting to his inner depths.
