I've noticed something, and I think it is important.

There's a big difference between saying "#agile is compatible with that, how interesting, where can I learn more?" and... "oh THAT'S AGILE SILLY" (paraphrasing).

Now I know ... (1/3)
...that there is shitty stuff being done under the #agile umbrella, and there's a lot of need to clarify intent and clarify principles...and frankly defend your work against blanket statements like AGILE SUCKS, but...

THAT'S NOT AGILE or THAT'S AGILE doesn't help (2/3)
...no one likes to be told that whatever they are doing is old hat, is "accepted" (or rejected) by your religion, and that the Forbes / HBR hype-machine around "agile" is the mandate for everyone. You wouldn't if roles were reversed.

So empathy and curiosity maybe? (3/3)

I hear from lots of product leaders that it is "impossible to find qualified product managers!"

But when I dig deeper into their structure, incentives, roles, etc. I find environments that are hostile to *anyone* being successful...spare the most hardened, cut-throat PdMs. (1/3)
...you also find that senior product leadership is spending an inordinate amount of time "managing up" ... so much so that they have almost no time to coach and develop their team.

So the only solution is "fully formed" PdMs (2/3)
...I compare this to environments where #ux and developers are empowered, there are fewer backroom dealings, teams work at a sustainable pace, there is more time for mentorship, and the demands for "junior" PdMs are vastly different.

Tend to notice these things when encountering healthier / more effective teams

1) Lots of organic/spontaneous functional and cross-functional collaboration

2) A sense of “flow”. Challenge w/meaningful (not theatrical) progress. Difficult but not dissonant. Focused *and* fun.
3) Fewer “emergencies” (things breaking, ppl freaking out, last minute meetings). When things do happen (rarely) the team is able to approach things calmly w/o blame

4) Shorter distance between the team and customers/users. A human connection. A partnership (of sorts).
5) More “let’s give it a try” or “that might work” or “we can always reverse that decision”. The team’s mission has gravity and resonates, but the day-to-day is not “do or die” or “this HAS to work or else!”

Looking for good examples of “professional culture clash” outside of digital software products. Film? Restaurants? Medicine? Music? Science?

E.g. actors and directors.
Doctors and Nurses ... a troubled partnership.

1. There's too much money.

"Money is free for those who are creditworthy because the investors who are giving it to them are willing to get back less than they give."
2. This extra money is acting like a hidden tax on growth rather than creating inflation.

I worked with an organization that once had 6 levels of reporting.

There was a CPO, with GMs reporting in, VP of Products reporting into GMs, Directors, PMs, APMs. They tried to give everyone their own product goal.

It did not scale well. /2 #prodmgmt
By the time the goals got to the Directors, they were so granular a solution dictation that there was no room for the rest of the team to experiment, learn, or talk about value.

Big difference between criticizing Israel's policies and arguing against Israel's *right to exist*.
Most of Goldberg's argument is that Israel is turning illiberal and right-wing, and it's not anti-Semitic to criticize the Netanyahu government policies. Which isn't anti-Semitism.

What she glosses over is the argument against the Jewish state itself.
Is Rep.-elect Tlaib's comment: "Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evils of Israel" anti-Semitic?

I'm only halfway through Bertrand Meyer's 2014 book, "Agile! The Good, the Hype and the Ugly", but it's already proven its worth as a lucid, unrestrained appraisal of #Agile principles and methodologies. Here are a few passages that resonated with me...
"#XP's insistence that [pair programming] should be the absolute rule [...] makes little sense conceptually, as it neglects the role of programmer personality (some excellent developers like to concentrate alone and will resent having to be paired) [...]"
